I'm struggling to get consistent grip pressure throughout the whole swing.

Are there any drills that can help you to maintain consistent grip pressure?

Golf is a game in which the ball always lies poorly and the player always lies well.

If you are changing grip pressure throughout the swing, and notice it, then I'd say try holding the grip more in your fingers and less in your hands. Sam Snead said to hold the club like a little bird...just tight enough so that it can't fly away but not so tight as to hurt it. Another tip is to imagine you are holding a tube of toothpaaste with the cap off. You want so little pressure that the toothpaste doesn't come out.

I think that your grip pressure might firm up slightly through impact due to the centrifical (sp?) force of the club. But I can't say that I actually feel that pressure change.

If you set the grip down in your fingers, and trust your grip, I've found you can swing with virtually no grip pressure at all. It's like the club is connected to your hands. You no more have to use your hands to hold the club than you have to use your forearms to hold your hands. It all just becomes one unit.

The problem is that at impact my grip pressure goes from a 5 to a 10 because I swing at around 130mph. If my grip pressure is too light the club is gonna slip out of my hand. I'd have to have a death grip throughout the whole swing, but that doesn't feel natural at all.

Sorry then....I can't help you. I can barely get my BALL to go 130mph. Honestly, that is no dis whatsoever. Your swing dynamics are just totally in another league from me. I do know what it feels like when I swing as hard as I can though, and I can kinda relate. When I do that I feel more tension in my wrists and hands. It makes it virtually impossible for me to not snap the face closed or fan it wide open.

I am curious though, is the problem just with the driver or all the clubs?

My miss is always a 10 yard fade and my big miss is a huge slice.

It's both with my irons and my driver. I took a lesson today and the pro said I need to have consistent grip pressure throughout the whole swing. When I check my grip after my follow through the clubface is always extremely shut which means that I regrip the club during my swing which leads to inconsistency.

I only ask because this came up in another thread....

You mentioned "regripping" during the swing. That can be due to a too high of a swing weight with the clubs. But if you swing that hard, I can't imagine a swing weight being too high for you unless it is off the charts. Another poster there mentioned that regripping can be due to holding the club in the palms too much. But I'm sure the grip would have been one of the first things addressed during a lesson. Plus you may be scratch for all I know, since I don't see that spec in your details. If you are a low handicap, then who am I to suggest grip tips?

I will try to find the link to that thread. It was more about heavy clubs, but it did address "regripping".

Good Luck!

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.
    • Day 115 12-5 Skills work tonight. Mostly just trying to be more aware of the shaft and where it's at. Hit foam golf balls.
    • Day 25 (5 Dec 25) - total rain day, worked on tempo and distance control.
    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
