Do it! Not only will the club make your bag smell awesome...it will make the club extra rusty, which means extra spinny!

I have a Titleist sw that is supposed to rust and you know what? I clean it after every round and sometimes i even put some 3 and 1 oil drops on it; just love the way it looks brand new, and has a great feeling in my opinion.

I'm pretty sure that rust=less spin. If you want less spin do it, but most people want more spin. There's also a deal of inconsistency with rust. One shot, you'll get spin and the next shot, you won't. That's a bad equation in golf.

Oil can wedges look sweet, but I'm not sure I would sacrifice consistency in my short game for that.

I don't know how well vinegar works but Coke works like a charm. I stripped my Oil Can and now it has a raw finish. Actually, because I live in a dry area and also keep my wedge dry after a wet round, it really hasn't rusted. I kind of like the raw look, it's pretty cool.

Doesn't anger me. Just frustrating. Golfers seem to do more to hurt themselves thinking they're doing something good than in any other sport I've seen.

http://thesandtrap.com/bag_drop/equi...#comment-13879 Rust never increases spin and quite often reduces it. Regarding rust, here's a quote from Titleist R&D; citing their research and Bob Vokey's own knowledge:

Source: Bob Vokey, R&D; According to Bob the bottom line is that rust does virtually nothing to affect spin. We have not been able to measure any meaningful change in spin because of the typical surface rust we see on raw wedges. Grooves and player technique is what determines spin. That said if the rust is significant enough to change/reduce the groove area, width and spacing it could start to reduce spin. We offer the Oil Can finish (essentially a raw wedge) for two reasons. The first and biggest reason is appearance. Players like the look. Some players feel it has less glare than our Tour Chrome and Black Nickel finishes. The second reason is that some players have the perception that a raw wedge is softer than a plated wedge. We have never been able to measure this and the fact that all Vokey wedges use a soft mild carbon steel 8620 base material, the wedges will feel soft no matter what finish you choose. However perception is a powerful thing and "if a player believes it then so be it". The final point is that grooves on raw wedges wear quicker which is what typically reduces spin, not rust.

I think the whole rust issue is a holdover from a time when grooves were not what they are now. I remember an old golf magazine article that had a study "proving" that extreme rust increased spin. That may have been true at one point in time. I'm thinking a super, rusty as hell, wedge would grab more than a smooth one AT THAT TIME....I think that was 10 or more years ago.

Given new wedge technology, I personally believe the rust issue has become obselete.

Thanks Guys, I guess i wont be doing that after all.

That might be. Maybe 20 years ago...? No idea. I was 10.

It comes down to this for me: have you ever seen a pro with a super-rusty wedge? No. Doesn't happen. You see 'em all the time with a dime-sized spot worn out - or you see them all the time with a fresh set every three weeks - but you never see 'em with rusted up wedges. This is one example where amateurs seem to ignore what the pros do to their detriment. Usually they try to emulate the pros to their detriment!

    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
    • IMO-the only thing entertaining was the relay race. Everything else was excruciatingly boring...or just  stupid, like the 14-club thing. Watching guys blade wedges into the water over and over is not at all interesting.
