seems like putting it farther up would make you top it even more

Hitting the ball further forward in your stance is not a bad training aid. You may not hit any good shots at first, but if you are just practicing try it.

There are several good things about hitting balls forward of normal (as long as you maintain balance, etc.) Sometimes I'll even hit wedges in line with my left toe -- just to get better extention through the shot and feel the chest covering the ball. It will give you a good feel for weight transfer, it will expose outside in swing problems, and it will give you a good feel for "covering the ball" with your torso and chest. So, give it a try and see if you can hit decent shots with the ball well forward. Then with the ball in a normal position it may seem much easier, and your swing may be a bit better afterwards.

This is not a magic pill or anything. I have no idea if it works for everyone. I just know it seems to help me get sorted out when my swing gets off.

The key is to swing smoothly. Keep your head/chin still and swing a big smooth circle around it. Smooth doesn't mean weak. Swing smoothly, with a purpose.
