Hey everyone. I play Ben Hogan BH-5 Irons 3-PW (not the offset version). I am about an 18 handicap but my scores are getting lower. Are these clubs suitable for improvement or would i be better off upgrading to a more mid handicap club. I hit these really well and have good control of my long, mid, and short irons. My gut feeling is to stick with them because even though they are cavity backs, they have the thinnest sole of any game improvement club i've seen and they have a very clean look. I would appreciate feed back.

If your scores are getting lower why change? Unless they are damaged, you don't like them, or you just want to spend money I see no reason. Best bet would be checking grips don't need renewing.

I guess someone will tell you to go to a launch monitor and compare with other irons!?

Where are all these launch monitors-I'd love to know so I can have a try. My launch monitor is a wet garden, mat and net.

As 'cocky' said, if they're working for you, why change. Hogan made great irons for a long time.

Of course if you suspect they are holding you back or you just want to buy new (we golfers are suckers about buying new equipment ) you can try out some other models and see what you think, maybe even comparing your current set against newer models on a launch monitor (or simulator at least). Sometimes this is all you need to convince yourself that your current clubs are better for you, but it's also possible you realize that something newer/differrent may be a better fit for you and your game. Either way, it would probably make you feel better about whichever decision you make.

If looking at newer clubs, there are a number of clubs that are in the game improvement category, but still look and feel much like players clubs (such as Mizuno MX-200, among others).

Whatever you do, have fun with it. I personally just enjoy trying new equipment and this process usually validates my current setup as being the best for me and prevents me from making purchase decisions that I might regret later.

I too am an equipment junky, but I use this a more of a validation of the equipment I currently use. This spring I'm sure there will be demo days in your area, go try new clubs, all kinds of new clubs, from a forged blade to a game improvement. If nothing absolutely grabs your attention, stick with what you have.

When it comes to advances in technology, irons seem to be the least effected, if you are comfortable with your set, like the way you hit the ball with them, don't be so quick to make a change. Even the Tour Pro's struggle when changing irons.

Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?

yup..keep them or find a good used set and keep yours. That way, if ever you don't like your new irons, at least you've got your old ones.
