10.4. Hoping to get to single digits this year, got to work on chipping/short game to accomplish my goal. I am consistently low 80s, but have not broken 80.

I get to play year round golf at the minute, at least until I move back to Ireland in a few months. Anyways, I got down to 11.8 in the middle of last year, which is as low as I've ever been. The second half of the year I was travelling for work every second week and that destroyed my golf game as I was only play the odd weekend round again, so my handicap went back up to where it is now, which is 13.9. I have been practising a lot recently, and taken a couple of really constructive lessons with my pro, and I'm starting to see the results. Shot 81 yesterday and 83 today so hopeful that my handicap will go down a shot or two before I leave the US in a couple of months.

I am currently a 7.4 index and would like to get down to a 5 by the end of this season. Consistency is definitely a problem I have. I feel as though once I get more consistent my index will drop quickly.

I'm currently a 6.2, but I expect that to drop over the next couple of months. I just started playing again after a 6 year hiatus. This year, depending on how much I play, I hope to get back down to a 2 or 3.

Cheers, Allan

I "win" among posters on this thread with a 33 handicap. Like many others here, I am searching for consistency. It would be helpful also if I could straighten out the driver. I think I may be able to shave several shots off this summer (I am a teacher and can play more during the break). I enjoy every small advance in my game. Last weekend I hit 7 of 14 fairways and was proud of that. I would love to be a bogey golfer.

Highly recommend a lesson or two. At your level, a few small changes can reap huge dividends.

My last offical handicap was 21. That was in 2007. I keep track last year and it now about 18. Will get an offical handicap for 2009 if it ever stops snowing. I did get in 3 rounds in Florida in Jan. I hope I play that well all year.

Where is the best place to keep an official handicap? I have never really had an official handicap and would like to keep it this year. My course does not do it any more. Also, just for reference, what would you guess my handicap to be now....I usually shoot at the worst 83 and best would be 77??

Course info:
Yardage is 6449
Rating is 71.2
Slope is 127

Thanks in advance

I started Golf about 6-7 months ago... first time out shot like a 150 LOL

Then this is my tail this year working really hard...
New Years pop my cherry and shot a 97
2-14 shot a 96
2-21 shot a 92 (with two drops)
2-21 shot a 44 (replay the back nine)
I just started keeping track of my handicapp from oobgolf, and it tells me I am at a 17.8 handicap with 94 scoring average...

I plan on playing this weekend again and hoping to shoot in the 80's
(I got a golf course in my backyard that I pay $20 w/ cart or $15 walking all day)
so this year I am planing on shooting in the 80's by June and in the 70's by winter...

If I can do that all in one year of golf... I will feel very accomplish... because I compete in Target Archery and in my first year won Shooter of the Year in my state...

I plan to get very good at golf... it is too expensive of a hobby just to go out and hack, plus my group of buddies loves to bet... every weekend it ends up being a $200-$300 pot...

I personally use golf.com for my official handicap and have for years now. Before I did this a local public course allowed people to keep a handicap through them for $30 a year. There a several golf websites that you can get and keep an official USGA handicap now. I know GolfGalaxy.com also does this and I believe TheGolfChannel.com does as well (not positive, though). Most of these sites are going to cost about $30/year for official handicap - some are free for a non-official handicap, though. They also allow you to keep stats as well.

As for what you handicap would be, that's always a tough question. Your handicap is figured by taking the best 10 scores of your last 20 rounds. Of course slope and rating are figured in to get the handicap differential for each of those rounds. There are several places you can get the complete formula for your handicap. Based on the limited info you provided your handicap is probably somewhere around 8-11 or so, but without all 20 rounds and as well as the slope and rating, etc. it's impossible to figure it.

You can either go to a local course, or there are lots of on-line options for maintaining a handicap these days. I use

www.ushandicap.com , but it's only one of many out there....... Your USGA handicap index is 96% of your best 10 of your last 20 handicap differentials. Your handicap differential for a given round is determined by taking your adjusted gross score (score adjusted for equitable stroke control) minus the course rating, times 113, divided by the course slope. In the case of your example.....let's say you shot an 82. Your differential would be: (82-71.2) X 113 / 127 = 9.6 Again, to get your actual handicap, you'll take the average of the best 10 of your last 20 differentials and multiply by 96%. That'll give you your handicap index. Play around with the numbers a little and you'll see how playing easier or harder courses (or teeboxes) can really impact your handicap. When most people try to estimate their handicap, they tend to estimate high. They'll try to guesstimate their average score and then use the difference between that and either 72 or the average course rating as their handicap. That doesn't take into consideration slope, the fact only the better scores are used, and the 96% weighting. Hope that helps a little. D.

My index is 10.6..... that means if I play a really EASY course, my handicap could go as low as an 8. But if I play a really HARD course, my handicap could go as high as 12!

The truth is your handicap will change at almost every course you play (even if your HANDICAP INDEX does not change).

What's your handicap index would have been a better question.

    • I have been debating getting a launch monitor of some sort, if only so I can re-figure my shot zones (I haven't actually mapped them in years) and also to practice distance wedges at home.  I have to see if this works with either my current setup, or what my setup would be if I move it to the garage.
    • Day 48, June 23.  After work today, I took 25 minutes in my practice room;  6-iron, same everything as yesterday except the time and count.
    • Well, this is interesting.  I think we discovered a few months ago that I haven't been following professional golf in a while (my confusion about Scotty's footwork confirmed that), so at least as I aim to follow a bit more I'll get something new to learn with all of you.  My very quick read of Erik's summary makes me think this new Challenger series fits somewhere between Korn Ferry and the Championship (not Champions, but I know I'm going to make that mistake a few times if I'm not careful!).   My recollection is that there were already second-tier events among the PGA Tour;  the Bob Hope didn't have the same quality of field as the event at Riviera (whose current name I forget, although now that I say that, I realize the Palm Springs event hasn't been called the Bob Hope in a few years either).   With the absence of the FedEx (if I'm reading that correctly), does that mean no more FedEx Cup at all? Hopefully I'll have time later in 2026 to sit down and see what we're in for in 2027, where one of my goals already is to follow more professional golf.
    • The highlights as I see them: Championship and Challenger Series The creation of the PGA Tour and the PGB Tour, in the words of Joel Dahmen a few years ago. They're calling them the Championship Series (23-24 events) and the Challenger Series (20+ events). Both run February to August. They feel this will achieve three things: increasing the consistency and quality of fields across the season creating a clear system for players to earn and retain status and delivering a more structured and competitive experience for fans and partners—all in an effort to strengthen meritocracy. Championship Series Structure and Eligibility The 23-24 events includes the Players, majors, season-ending events, and the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. These will be 72-hole events with a 36-hole cut to the top 65 and ties and purses of $20M+. 120 players without an alternate list. 90 players (roughly) from the previous year and 20 players promoted from the Challenger Series. Full eligibility will be finalized later this year. Sites (cities) to be finalized soon, but 10 of the 15 courses have already been determined. Postseason: includes retention and relegation and concludes with match play. The Tour Championship will also be played across a rotation of prestigious courses. Challenger Series Structure and Eligibility 20+ events. Running concurrently. Will feature players fighting their way back to the Championship Series or players graduating and on the upswing from the Korn Ferry Tour. Many of these events will be current PGA Tour courses. About 7 of the Challenger Series events will be during off weeks for the Championship Series with elevated purses and visibility. Purses of at least $4M, with cuts similar to the Champ series. 144 player fields. Competitive Fields for Both Series Players will be eligible for only one series at a time: Championship Series Players are not eligible for Challenger Series events. Championship Series members will have a known schedule with all events having the same eligibility. Players and Majors will have their own eligibility criteria. Championship Series players don't have to play all events. This begs the question about, say, the Canadian Open, and other "home-town" events that players might want to play, even if they're Challenger Series events. Will releases be granted? Promotion and Relegation At least 90 players will be retained in the Championship Series, and 20 players will be promoted from the Challenger Series each year. Battlefield promotion for two-time winners from the Challenger Series. Players relegated from the Championship Series will have a "last chance" opportunity to retain status, or will go to the Challenger Series. Criteria will be finalized before the start of the 2027 season. Points System New points system (not FedExCup points). Separate points systems for the Championship and Challenger Series. Elevated points in the Challenger Series for off-weeks on the Championship Series. More details tk. Elevated International Events in the Fall The fall schedule will include a limited series of elevated international events with top players from the Championship Series, with the intent to deliver in partnership with the DP World Tour as part of the Strategic Alliance. Last Chance Series The Tour will develop a “last chance” series of 4-6 events in the fall, with a limited number of spots on the Championship Series available for top finishers. Eligibility will include players relegated from the Championship Series, Challenger Series players, and other categories to be determined. Q-School continues, as do the Korn Ferry Tour and PGA Tour Latinoamerica. Also, Brian Rolapp is the new commissioner as of January 1, 2027.
