What did you notice going from regular to midsize grips?

Every fitting I've had, I've been told I should play midsize grips.

I still stick with regulars with two layers of tape beneath due to being so accustomed to this.

It is such a big jump that I'd not enter into it lightly....not only in size but also at $100 per regripping it can be a costly venture, too.

I am playing midsize grips and have for a few years now. The biggest difference I noticed playing with them was that I simply didn't need to grip the club as hard. Because of this my swing became a little smoother. If they are saying you need midsize grip maybe you should try. You could regrip a club you seldom use (or one you do not normally carry) to see if you like it first. You could even do the regripping yourself as it's pretty easy (I'm assuming you do not already do your own regripping). All you need is the tape, solution and a utility knife. It's much easier than you might think. The only problem I ever have with regripping clubs is doing driver and woods, because the shafts are longer and have larger diameter at the butt end it can be difficult to get the grip on.

I definitely think you should try larger grips. Almost everyone I know who has tried them has liked them. Another thing I have noticed is that because I am able to grip the club lighter, my hands do not get as sore when I play a lot.

I use jumbo grips.

The biggest difference I noticed was I felt like I had a firmer grip on the club with lighter pressure. Part of the problem I had with smaller grips was my fingers would wrap all the way around the grip to where they were touching my palm, and I still didn't have a solid grip on the club (imagine holding an ungripped shaft, and you probably know how it felt.) With the larger grip my fingertips just lightly touch my palm.

I also feel like I'm less of a handsy/wristy player with the larger grips.

Why don't you try just regripping one club and see how it feels. Heck, if you want go Goodwill and buy a used 7 iron for $2 and have it regripped and see how you like it.

$100 does seem to be a bit steep to regrip a set of clubs. Our local place charges $1 to regrip a club IF you buy the grip from them. I use the Lamkins which run about $3 each. $4 x 13 clubs = $52 to regrip and entire set. Of course, if you are using high-end grips that run $6, $7, $8 or more I can see how the total can come out to around $100.

Not to highjack this into a gripping thread, but regripping a club is easy. Golfsmith has some online videos here: http://www.golfsmith.com/cm/display_...eos_clubmaking that show you how. I do mine and it is very simple.

I have decided to get really serious about my game this year. So, I had an iron fitting and a driver fitting for the first time ever. The fitter recommended several changes, including going from regular to jumbo grips (I have huge hands). I wound up having a complete set of clubs built and had them all outfitted with Crossline jumbos. It's still early (I've only played 5 rounds with my new clubs) but I have noticed an immediate improvement in my accuracy. Some of that could be because of the lessons I'm taking but the clubs definitely feel more stable. My grip pressure is a lot lighter than before and I seem to be having a much easier time squaring the club face through impact. I feel like I have a lot more control than I ever had before.

Don't the Bobby Jones/Pelz wedges come with a mid-size grip as standard equipment? I believe Pelz believes most people are better off using a larger grip.

Pelz feels that most amateurs are too "wristy" with their wedges around the green. Probably correct. The larger grips impede hand action.

I'd try ONE club with the midsize before you go with a total switch. Hand size plays a large part in grip selection. If your hands are big, or you have extremely long fingers, it might be a good suggestion. (obviously these fitters are seeing something) But on the other hand...Arnold Palmer has very large hands, and he plays regular grips. It's a personal preference for sure. Just remember that the larger the grip...the less your hands can respond at impact. The club should be held in the fingers. Larger grips (that are too large) can cause you to move the club more up into the palm. Be careful with your grip sizes. There's absolutely no reason not to experiment. Just don't commit yourself until you're sure.

First off - If people are paying over $100 for regrips...I think you need to look around for a better deal. That seems extremely steep to me.

Secondly - if you have a slice or a fade problem it may be because your grips are a touch small. The bigger grip will promote a more draw action with the club head. I am not sure if there is much of a difference between a mid-size and extra tape, as I just use the mid-size grip. There may not be that much of a difference and you may not need to switch...but it sounds like you don't re-grip your clubs to often, which you really should at least once a year. It makes a huge difference IMO.

That's just TOTALLY incorrect.

Since a lot of folks here have questioned my opinions lately...I'll quote directly from Ping's website...... Larger grip diameters tend to restrict the release and may promote a fade or help reduce a draw or hook. Smaller grip diameters tend to encourage the release and may promote a draw or help reduce a fade or slice. Not to be rude and not trying to embarrass, but you guys need to be careful with your opinions if you aren't sure of the facts. This statement could have cost someone a bunch of money and made matters worse in the process.

I have used tour velvet midsize for years (except for a try with Winn DSi last year) and never plan on changing. Agree with the above wholeheartedly, the bigger the grip the quieter the hands.

For comparison sake, my club will replace grips for $7/club, regardless of style of grip you want. 13 clubs, $91 bucks + tax. So $100 for a re-grip doesn't sound that far off. I'm not implying whether it's too expensive or not, but people around here appreciate a standard rate especially those that use Winn grips which are costly...

One wrap of tape is approximately 1/64 in. Midsize is 1/16 in. greater than standard, which is 4 wraps of tape. Basically, having two wraps of tape is halfway between standard and midsize. If that's what feels comfortable, then there's no need to change.

**edit** Here's my source by the way.

Good catch! I've just re gripped my clubs from regular to mid, and one of the reasons other than the fact the grips are clearly too small for me as my fingers were more than lightly resting on my palms, was also the fact that my swing with a regular grip does encourage a larger release greatly promoting a draw.

Properly sized grips will enhance to feel of the club in your hands and your grip tension will be lighter which can greatly assist in generating more consistent contact and power through the ball.

My apologies...that was a case of me not reading my post clearly enough before submitting.

I meant to convey that. The funny thing is the night before I wrote that post I was talking to a buddy of mine who is a club maker about this exact subject. My apologies...I don't normally post many things regarding technical sides of the game mostly because I don't know what I am talking about. Thanks for catching that and speaking up.

Been playing them a year or so now and I find everything is just more "solid". More of a feel thing I guess but my irons in particular are more consistent now. Wouldn't go back to regular now.

$100 a set is too much. You could do it yourself for less than $40. Saw a good thread earlier detailing exactly how to do it:

At the same time, let's not let your sensitivity to whatever criticism you may have received from whomever cause you to go a little over the top with the warning.

As for the original post, I got slightly larger grips (on the recommendation of the fitter) when I had my irons reshafted and noticed not having to "grip" the club as much and like the difference. Made a positive change, at least perceived, in grip pressure.

    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
