I am trying to find a relatively inexpensive course in Maryland that is relatively challenging. Any suggestions?

Several years ago I played a number of courses in Maryland. It depends where in Maryland you are. Two courses that come to mind are:
Clustered Spires Golf Course in Frederick, MD
White Plains Golf Club in White Plains, MD

I'd be happy to make suggestions, but please tell us what you mean by inexpensive, and where in the state you are looking.

I don't know exactly where you live ..but... around highway 270 (DC - Frederick) has many good courses belong to Montgomery County. Check their web site. http://www.montgomerycountygolf.com/
One of my favorite is Little Bennett GC in Clarksburg, MD.
oh.. also Redgate GC in Rockville, MD is affordable but very good conditon.

I am near DC. As far as affordable goes, I just don't want to have to spend more than $50 a round right now. I just want to get back on the course and then when I start getting comfortable again go to some nicer courses.

I live in Silver Spring and Hampshire Greens is a great, Challenging course. I got to play Lake Presidential with my golf team last year and it was a great layout. Not sure how much it cost though. Also in a few moths the University of Maryland course will open and will be pretty nice.

Good to hear U of M course will open again. I played there 5 years ago and amazed how nice its layouts are but also amazed that how terrible course maintenance could ruin the nice course. Hope the course open with better condition.

I live in southern maryland. If you are close to DC i would recommend the drive to a course called Swan Point in Issue, MD, which is approx 45 miles from the metro area. It is rated top 10 in Maryland and has a very pinehurst type feel. Price is less than $50 now and it is definitely a steal. Another nice course is Potomac Ridge in Accoceek, MD which is very close to DC, maybe 25 miles. It is a very highly rated course. I have also heard great things about Maryland National in Middletown, MD. I've heard Renditions is a pretty fun course too. It is pretty nearby DC as well. I don't know how challenging they'll be for you since you are a +3.6, but I know you will enjoy them. Swan Point is my favorite course apart from the courses i played in Pinehurst.

So the my list is:
Swan Point
Maryland National
Potomac Ridge
Renditions

I used to live in the Rockville/Potomac area. For that money, I'd confirm certain recommendations made above:

Little Bennett
Redgate

Both are reasonably well-conditioned. Redgate used to have an insane tee time system but it's been 3 years since I lived there and I have no idea if they still use it.

If you are willing to spend more, there are a ton of great courses in and around DC, suburban MD and northern VA, including:

Whiskey Creek (MD) - my personal favorite
Maryland National (MD)
Musket Ridge (MD)
Blue Mash (MD)
Stonewall (Northern VA)

PB Dye in MD and Virginia Oaks in VA are challenging tracks that my playing partners and I always found too penal. They are fun to try for a change of pace, but I'd recommend the other courses much more highly.

Enjoy.

Honestly didn't even know that courses still exist where you can pay only $10 for a green fee. Little shocked. That definitely makes going back out to the course a little less painful.

Yeah. Swan Point club is good choice too. I heard the club is going to be re-owned to a big hotel chain and will be opened as a hotel resort. Play while it's affordable.

Rendition GC, replica of holes from major championship courses, is little pricy ($90 for summer) but well worth to play. You will have a chance to play one of famous holes of Inverness, St. Andrew, Oakmont, Augusta, Southern Hills, and many more. If you are coming DC area for visit, try this. Oh.. TPC Sawgrass island hole is there. Maryland National GC is another great course. you will learn to play with wind every holes with mid-west type layouts (architected by Ross, i believe).
