Ok, i am looking for some real data here. I listened to the podcast about the differences between the old and new ProV1x, but it sounded to me like the ball cover durability was really the bigest change.

Has anyone seen any data concerning diferences in distance between the two balls?

The reason I am asking is I have 9 boxes left of last years and I am golf nut who wants to make sure I am not missing out on 3 extra yards, ha ha.

thanks for the feedback!

You probably are missing out on some distance and need to dump your 9 boxes. I am willing to take those crummy balls off of your hands for $20/dozen. Deal?

There isnt much of a difference distance-wise but durability is the major change. They made the new 09's to better withstand the vicious attacks of the SM vokeys and those other nasty wedges.

And a bit more distance added to the Pro V1. Also, Pro V1 spins a bit more off the irons.

It's going to vary quite a bit from golfer to golfer. Either way, you're likely not missing out on a substantial amount of anything - distance, spin, etc. - by playing a slightly older ball.

Last year I played on some balls from 2005/2006, I hope the newer ones are more durable. One shot with a wedge and the ball is wasted.

I tried prov1x for the first time yesterday and the feel was great but there was a tiny bit of ballooning compared to my other favorite balls...

Not a ton but defineately noticeable. Prov1 is the next ball I will try and I think it will launch a bit lower...

I'm also experimenting with the Pro-V1x. I really like these balls...more distance but still soft around the greens and they spin plenty for my game. That said, I'd be really surprised if the V1 has a lower ball flight because it has more dimples and more spin. I think you'll find that it'll actually fly higher. Just my 2 cents.

    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
