Guys,

We just came back from our annual Myrtle Trip and the weather couldnt have been any better, but some of the courses were in terrible shape.

Here is the list:

1) Barefoot -Fazio ( Nice layout, horrible conditions)

2) Barefoot -Love (Another great layout, but did not like the conditions)

3) Barefoot -Norman ( Greg Norman should stick to wine making...boring layout)

4) Tidewater (Great track with a lot of character and the best par 3, the 12th hole was awesome!)

5) Pearl West ( Not a bad track in pretty good condition )

6) Glen Dornoch ( THE BEST COURSE we played, what a GREAT Track, with great conditions and the best greens!)

7) Heather Glen ( Another great track with a great finishing hole, the greens were great!)

8) River Hills ( Good track, with some tough holes. Green were not great, but good character)

The bottom line is that the courses are hurting down there and the Barefoot courses are WAY, WAY Overpriced! Heather Glen and Glen Dornoch are the best two courses we played...

It is early season for them also.It has been a rough winter down there they had snow twice and many mornings of 20 something degrees.Go back first week of April and the Fazio is a great course usually in great condition.I do think they sre over priced also. The Glenns are nice and Tidewater is a great course but can be spotty as far as condition due to all the play it gets.Next time hit The Dunes you will love it.

Guys,

I was down there last week as well. That weather was unreal! It was crappy there the week before, and got crappy the day after we left, but in between it was fantastic!!!!

What were the problems you found with the conditions at Barefoot Fazio? We played it March 10 and had no problems at all. Greens rolled true, fairways were fine, bunkers were well groomed, normal dormant bermuda rough for March in SC. Here are some pix of Fazio from that day. The guys from my group rated that round a ten out of ten and worth the green fee.

sabram glad to hear all went well.So you liked Founders?Would you have liked to have to walk it?Just kidding. The mrs and I love the Fazio and Love courses the other 2 are OK but Norman is bland and Dye is way over rated. The Heath and Morelands are both strong Myrtle courses that can and will kick your ass.You should go in May when everything is blooming real nice it is quite nice.

The dunes is the best course hands down.

A little tough for the average joe to get on! UBER Private

The legends resort has 54 great holes and the money for upkeep. Used to work there.

Hi Flap - I agree 100% re: Barefoot. Having played Fazio on this last trip, I've now played all four. Love had been my favorite, but I think I now prefer Fazio by a hair although I would be happy to play either one over and over. Re: Legends, I thought Moorland was a lot stronger than Heathland. There was not a bad or forgettable hole on Moorland. Heathland had soem good holes, but not 18 of them. Moorland was the more difficult of the two, but I was lucky enough to have a good ball striking day and did not let "the rub of the green" bother me. Moorland gets a A from me. Heathland a B. Parkland, somewhere between those two.

Barefoot's rates are $185 per their website; way overpriced for Myrtle Beach. The courses here are overseeded with rye and some years it doesn't take so well and the fairways can be thin, muddy and soft. I am glad you found some courses in great shape. All the greens should be in top shape this time of the year in Myrtle. They will start punching in May as the spring season winds down. Then they kill the rye and its 4 to 6 weeks of some pretty bad conditions until the Burmuda, shaded by the rye grass can grew in. If they did not overseed, the Burmuda would take off in April and the summer would be the best course conditions here.

Wachesaw-I agree with you but not all the myrtle courses are bermuda any more and the new strains like Tif eagle they try to stay away from overseeding all together.I cant wait to go to the granddaddy to play on that paspaslum grass they say it is the best they have come up with yet.The Mrs and I allways {the last 15 years anyway}come down the 2nd week of may and all the courses are in great shape. We are relocating to Loris this year and can't wait for year round golf.

I used to live on Pine Lakes golf course. I still work a few miles away and hope to play it this or next week. I hear it is really nice and the changes were for the better. Where I regularly play we do not overseed and the dormant Bermuda makes a great winter turf and the grass is already green. Once the lows overnight stay above 60, the grass will take off.

    • My next golf trip will probably be a short one, but I’m really looking forward to it. I’m thinking of staying relatively close, picking a spot with a few solid courses and making a long weekend out of it. For me, the best golf trips are about good courses, relaxed vibes, and time away with friends.
    • Nah, man. People have been testing clubs like this for decades at this point. Even 35 years. @M2R, are you AskGolfNut? If you're not, you seem to have fully bought into the cult or something. So many links to so many videos… Here's an issue, too: - A drop of 0.06 is a drop with a 90 MPH 7I having a ball speed of 117 and dropping it to 111.6, which is going to be nearly 15 yards, which is far more than what a "3% distance loss" indicates (and is even more than a 4.6% distance loss). - You're okay using a percentage with small numbers and saying "they're close" and "1.3 to 1.24 is only 4.6%," but then you excuse the massive 53% difference that going from 3% to 4.6% represents. That's a hell of an error! - That guy in the Elite video is swinging his 7I at 70 MPH. C'mon. My 5' tall daughter swings hers faster than that.
    • Yea but that is sort of my quandary, I sometimes see posts where people causally say this club is more forgiving, a little more forgiving, less forgiving, ad nauseum. But what the heck are they really quantifying? The proclamation of something as fact is not authoritative, even less so as I don't know what the basis for that statement is. For my entire golfing experience, I thought of forgiveness as how much distance front to back is lost hitting the face in non-optimal locations. Anything right or left is on me and delivery issues. But I also have to clarify that my experience is only with irons, I never got to the point of having any confidence or consistency with anything longer. I feel that is rather the point, as much as possible, to quantify the losses by trying to eliminate all the variables except the one you want to investigate. Or, I feel like we agree. Compared to the variables introduced by a golfer's delivery and the variables introduced by lie conditions, the losses from missing the optimal strike location might be so small as to almost be noise over a larger area than a pea.  In which case it seems that your objection is that the 0-3% area is being depicted as too large. Which I will address below. For statements that is absurd and true 100% sweet spot is tiny for all clubs. You will need to provide some objective data to back that up and also define what true 100% sweet spot is. If you mean the area where there are 0 losses, then yes. While true, I do not feel like a not practical or useful definition for what I would like to know. For strikes on irons away from the optimal location "in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?"   In my opinion it ok to be dubious but I feel like we need people attempting this sort of data driven investigation. Even if they are wrong in some things at least they are moving the discussion forward. And he has been changing the maps and the way data is interpreted along the way. So, he admits to some of the ideas he started with as being wrong. It is not like we all have not been in that situation 😄 And in any case to proceed forward I feel will require supporting or refuting data. To which as I stated above, I do not have any experience in drivers so I cannot comment on that. But I would like to comment on irons as far as these heat maps. In a video by Elite Performance Golf Studios - The TRUTH About Forgiveness! Game Improvement vs Blade vs Players Distance SLOW SWING SPEED! and going back to ~12:50 will show the reference data for the Pro 241. I can use that to check AskGolfNut's heat map for the Pro 241: a 16mm heel, 5mm low produced a loss of efficiency from 1.3 down to 1.24 or ~4.6%. Looking at AskGolfNut's heatmap it predicts a loss of 3%. Is that good or bad? I do not know but given the possible variations I am going to say it is ok. That location is very close to where the head map goes to 4%, these are very small numbers, and rounding could be playing some part. But for sure I am going to say it is not absurd. Looking at one data point is absurd, but I am not going to spend time on more because IME people who are interested will do their own research and those not interested cannot be persuaded by any amount of data. However, the overall conclusion that I got from that video was that between the three clubs there is a difference in distance forgiveness, but it is not very much. Without some robot testing or something similar the human element in the testing makes it difficult to say is it 1 yard, or 2, or 3?
