I was told at my last fitting that I need stiff shafts in my irons because of my aggressive move downward. I have some swings flaws in which I am flat and come up on my toes at impact. Part of this could be swinging too hard but I know most of it is just bad fundamentals. My question is, if I slow my swing to stop coming up on my toes, will this affect the need for stiffer shafts or should I go ahead and get the stiff shafts? My 6i swing speed was consistent from 90.5-91.8 with a high swing of 95.4. I would say my average out of the four swings was 92.1.

It could definitely make a difference. Swing speed, tempo, and angle of attack ALL have a bearing on shaft choice. If you're planning on making a definite swing change, you might want to wait about making any shaft decisions.

hot damn. you must be taking your 6 iron about 220 - 230 yards! i don't even wanna know how fast you swing your driver. at a ss like that, i'd even say you can swing project x 6.5's

Really? My driver ss is an average of 105.8. As far as my 6i total distance was an average of 171.8. My 6i is my 165-170 club. 220-230 is a stretch, haha!! This was all done on a Zelocity monitor. What is the average club speed with a 6i?

With a 6 iron swing speed of 92 you should be FLYING your 6 iron about 197. If your 6 iron total is 172 yards your swing speed is likely 80 mph

Here's the recommended swing flex chart from the Project X site:

driver: FT-i tlcg 9.5˚ (Matrix Ozik XCONN Stiff)
4 wood: G10 (ProLaunch Red FW stiff)
3 -PW: :Titleist: 695 mb (Rifle flighted 6.0)
wedges:, 52˚, 56˚, 60˚
putter: Studio Select Newport 1.5

No!....that's not it at all. You see, us Tennessee guys like to play those re-furbished Top Flites. You gotta hit them buggers HARD to get them to go 175.

On a serious note....maybe the speeds were recorded wrong. I'm like he said: With that high a swing speed, you should be KILLING the ball. Something doesn't add up.

I am getting this info from a club fitting that was done outside. The ss numbers I am stating are not simply guesses but swing speeds that were charted during the fitting. One other thing I did not mention was the fact that there was about a 20mph wind blowing in my face during the fitting. But even when I'm on the course, I don't fly my 6i 197. So are you saying that the club fitting was wrong?

Here are my numbers: Club speed-Ball velocity-Launch angle-Ball spin-Carry distance-Total distance 1) 90.5-113.9-18.6-5701-157.8-169.1 2) 91.8-118.1-20.4-5456-166.5-178.8 3) 95.4-117.2-19.8-5601-164.6-176.7 4) 90.7-110.5-20.4-5529-152-162.7 Also, can you give me a link to that site? Those are the shafts that I am interested in.

Does that monitor show you what your club looks like at impact? From looking at the ratio of ball speed to club speed, it seems as though you are not making pure contact.

FWIW, try and hit several different stiff flex shafts. They all don't play the same; some have softer tips, some have a lower vs higher launch, some weigh less and some flex softer/harder. Have your fitter give you as many different shaft options on the same head to find the perfect combination. If I may make a suggestion based on a comparison of SS's, take a look at the True Temper Tour Concept S1 shaft series, the KBS Tours in a 5.5 flex and the Nippon 1150 Stiff Series. My swing SS is similar to yours (albeit mine is with a 5I) and these felt the best and easiest to swing. Just some food for thought. Good luck.

These were hit with my 6i and the impact tape showed that I was hitting them low on the club face. I think that may be a bi-product of me coming up on my toes.

The thing with this fitter is that he doesn't really have the different shafts like KBS, Project X, etc...He has a set of shafts that he uses to fit for his Wishon clubs. They screw into the Wishon heads. What he does is gets the info from the fitting and inputs this into their software program and then the software lists out the optimum shafts based on your fitting info. He suggested either Rifle shafts or KBS

Your definitely loosing a lot of distance hitting the ball low on the clubface with those MP-32s. If you made solid contact, even a slightly slower swing speed would result in a lot more distance.

That is probably the discrepancy here with my swing speed. He also suggest that I get a slightly longer shaft than standard. I am worried about getting a slightly longer shaft because I think the low shots may be because of me coming up on my toes. What do you guys think about this?

So hypothetically, I get my swing fundamentals more honed in and stop coming up on my toes and hit the ball in the middle of the club face...should I be carrying my 6i the suggested 197 with my swing speed? I know that I am losing some distance because of where the impact is but am I really losing 25 yards just from hitting it that low? One more question...I was told that you can only get the Rifle shafts installed by a certified Rifle shaft installer. Is this true?

I wouldn't think so. If that were the case, you couldn't purchase them from component suppliers. Fujikura started this crap several years ago by demanding that their dealers NOT sell shafts unless they did the installation. You can buy Rifles from Golfsmith, Golfworks, and several other places. Anyone who has the expertise can install a set of shafts.

Although I made a shaft recommendation, it's just that. You may hate them or they may not feel right. You're spending big bucks for shafts, installation, new grips, etc and to have a computer tell you what you should be using, without you being able to hit them, IMHO is worthless. There is a company called Max Out Golf Labs based in California. They may have an affiliate near you or can make a recommendation on someone you can see that will provide you with multiple shaft options to try. At the very least, it will provide you with an opportunity to test clubs without the commitment to purchase.

I agree with you 100% on that. And I will try different ones before I actually buy any. That was just my experience that weekend. Thanks for the info though

I had a custom fitting session with a place in Denver called D'Lance golf. They use the True Temper Shaft Lab that measures the flex you create on a 5 iron and driver and then recommend clubs based on that and not on swing speed. Per the people at the some retail outlets, they said that I should be a upper regular to lower stiff and D'Lance golf with their equipment has me configured for x-stiff because of the amount of flex I put on the shaft.

The clubs you swing have an electrical cord coming out of the butt end of the club and is tied to the computer and measures flex up and down and side to side. I am a bigger guy and create a lot of force.

    • @colin007, in terms of realistic sci-fi, its the best ever. They actually had an astrophysicist consult on the movie to be as accurate as possible with what we know about the universe.  For like dystopian, Blade Runner is probably king. Action/suspense is probably Alien/Aliens. Though Starship Troopers is fantastic. The Matrix is amazing.
    • Day 4 (August 14).  Full swing in my indoor practice room;  6-iron, off a mat, into a net.  Focus was on what I believe was my priority piece at last lesson (which, admittedly, was almost three years ago, due to absence).  I hit about a dozen balls this morning before going into the office.  (Also, errata to yesterday:  9 of the 12 coins were picked up on the second or third go around -- you can't pick up one on the first go around for that drill)
    • Watched The Gentlemen, took a little bit to get into it, but very good Guy Ritchie movie.  Collin Farrell and Hugh Grant were great. Give it a birdie.
    • Played in the Rhode Island CC Senior Member guest, my partner and I won the tournament. 2-day Stableford format, we ended with 104 points, won by 7. Points include 2 holes on each 9, where both players score count, can make up some points if you both play well on those holes.  @DaveP043has played a similar format (I played with Dann from RICC).
    • Played Wannamoisett CC on Monday.  What a neat old Donald Ross course, Par 69.  The conditions were immaculate, might be one of the best maintained courses, I've played.
