Hey, i am looking into buying the Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport 2, and i was wondering if its worth it to buy it now. Im not sure, but didnt it come out around 2 years ago? so if i buy it now, there is a chance that a new one will come out in about 2 months, and then i will have used 300 bucks for nothing. What do you guys think? Also, do bigger sized putter grips help with the wrist during putting? Thanks

Scotty's putter for the spring of 2009 is the Kombi. You won't see a new putter until the fall.

Scotties don't really depreciate in value either. Perhaps the opposite most of the time.

The theory is a larger putter grip will keep your hands more neutral, and less

"wristy" throughout the stroke. One of my former playing partners, a Canadian Tour member, had his grip done... I think it was almost 1 1/2" in diameter... he said it was done to prevent the yips

All that being said, if "big grips" were truly the best way to putt, every PGA Tour pro would be using 'em too.

I think there's a kernel of truth to the "handsy" part, but in general you're better off learning to putt properly with "standard" equipment if you can . I also think a bit of the "truth" is just a mental thing... just like changing putters or your pre-shot routine or how you hold your putter ("your grip" instead of the putter's "grip").

When you get a Scotty, your not worried about whats going to come out next year or anything like that........

actually, its that way for pretty much any high end putter you buy these days anyway....

I have a Studio Style Newport 2.... that model came out about two or three years ago.....

do I care that my putter is over two years old?

absolutely not.... and neither should you.......

its not like the putter ages and all of the sudden it's bad or something.......

worrying about what's going to come out next year is a bad way to look at something in golf when thinking about purchasing equipment.....

Buy used if you're worried about the price. I picked mine up for $220 with an extra SC grip included.

The Cameron Collector is a great place for SC info.

I've never seen anyone use an oversize grip on the Newport style putters. It seems like it'd be counterproductive with allowing the putter to release through the stroke. First off...hate to think of spending $300 on a stick that didn't fit me perfectly right from the first moment.

Maybe you should consider a face balanced mallet if you are gonna go with the oversized grip. It seems that then your grip and stroke path would be more in harmony with one another.

I completly agree with this post.

I happen to also use a Studio Style Newport, but the 1.5 instead of the 2 - I love it and can't see myself needing to change it regardless of what comes out. Sinking Putts is all that matters.

What about for a $400 driver that's worth $50 in 3 years? The SC could be worth $200 still. Hence, the value.

I spent $470 on my SC Newport 2 Button Back. And I play with it. Every round. It is in my bag with the other clubs. I didn't buy it to put it on the shelf and marvel at it. I bought it to enjoy while playing. Is my game adequate for such a work of art? Some might question that. But I am about me, and not about everyone else, when I choose my equipment. The leather grip, almost nothing *golf related* feels better in the hand. Its really fun to put with. I find it money well spent. I'll play with this putter for years. I also bet that if/when I move on to another putter, I get at least $250 for this putter, and it will be well played at that point.

I say get what YOU want, not what others tell you to get or based upon the value judgments of others, as far as price goes. If others advice is based upon something other than money, I'd say consider it. But to disregard an awesome putter on price alone is the wrong way to look at it, IMHO.

I think for the purpose of this thread it should be assumed that:
A.) the OP has determined that Scotty Cameron putters are worth the asking price
B.)The only "value" the OP is concerned with at this point has to do with purchasing an OLD Cameron just as a NEW Cameron was released. In both cases just comparing Scotty to Scotty

Just mentioning it because we've done the "whole driver/putter, it's just an over-priced anser copy, Scotty's are king/Scotty sucks" thing in other threads and that's totally not what the OP was asking...

To the OP: if you like the look/feel of the Select and it's in your price range then it's a great wand. The fact that it's a bit older might make it easier to find for a bit less $$ thus making it even easier to get your $$ back from the purchase of you ever decide to go another route. Be careful buying Cameron stuff on eBay.
Good Luck.

If you think $300 is ridiculous, consider that I'm probably sending in my Newport Mil-Spec after this season to Scotty to have it refinished, new grip, and have my initials stamped on the toe - probably going to run me $200.
