My name is Ian. Basically im a Grade 11 playing for my school in Vancouver.
I play off a 7 and hope to nab the top spot on my highschool team. This looks like a strong possibility this year.

We play a total of 8 matches and based on those we win we may or may not go to provincials. The 2 playoff qualifiers are to be played at my and my teamates home course, so we will have a strong advantage over the opposing team.

The courses in the area have volunteered to give us free green fees during our matches which can be over 3500$ PER ROUND depending on the course. (350$ per person -> ten players) .

Goals:

Get below a 5 handicap
Qualify for provincials

My schedule is as follows.

We practice tuesdays and thursdays either at the range or the course.. I practice much more on my own also :)

Official team matches:

Will be in order: date/opponent/COURSE

March 12th Team Practice 9 at GLENEAGLES
I scored 39 on 9 holes, which was the best on the team.

March 26th vs Elphinstone @ CAPILANO

April 1st Vs. Collingwood @ GLENEAGLES

April 8th Vs. Balmoral @ FURRY CREEK

April 17th Vs. Don Ross @ SEYMOUR

April 20th Vs. Chatelech @ SUNSHINE COAST GC

April 22nd Vs STA @ FURRY CREEK

April 27th Vs. Don Ross @ SEYMOUR

May 8th Vs. PLAYOFFS @ GLENEAGLES

Will also be playing in both my club championships in august.

The simplest thing, go out there and do your thing! Don't worry about what your competitors do. Stick to your game and beat em that way, don't try and do things you can't do trying to pick up a win that way and hurt yourself.

My biggest thing for me in matches was trust yourself and never second guess yourself. If you think you can hit a shot...hit it. If it doesn't work out, keep your head up and do it the next time.

Don't let bad shots get to you, keep your head in it. If you hit a bad shot, come back and make a good shot and now the bad shot never happened. Just a couple things I used in hs matches and that I'll use myself in college.

Thats all very good advice ill keep it in mind, i actually wasnt very clear i realise now. What i meant was considering the fact that im playing with a teamate, i could go and shoot par, and he could shoot 120 and mess us up and vice versa how do i get that out of my head :P

In a team match like golf there isn't a lot you can do except to "pick each other up" ... in this situation your team is only as strong as your weakest link, and your team is only as good as the highest posted score.

This isn't like bseball, or hockey, where if one member of the team was having an off night someone else from the team can pick up the slack ... it's very possible you could go out and shoot 75 and your team mate could shoot 105 ... all you can do is make the shots you know YOU can make ... be a leader, step-up and post those low scores. Play the course, not your opponent and most importantly BE CONFIDENT in your abilities!

Good luck mate!

Sounds like you need to work on your iron play and/or your short game. Think about your shots into the green. Did you short side yourself? If your miss is to the right and the pin is over there, aim at the left-center or center of the green. If you miss, you might be on the pin, however if you hit your normal shot you should be left with a 20-25 ft putt. The pros dont go at every pin, (unless your name is Phil M.)they pick out the the holes that favor their shot and try and score on those holes, otherwise they to put it in a safe position to guarentee par. With you putting, you might very well make a few of those.

Play your game, not your opponent or teammate

Good luck.
My HS team went 10-0 for our first ten matches and then lost our final two. We ended up sharing league titles . Talk about choke artists...

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
    • I played tennis in college. I thought block practice was great for serves because you were starting the point and  you could easily adjust where you wanted to place the ball based off the same motion. I equate those to tee balls. I despised block practice for groundstrokes once you reached a certain level and your fundamentals were good. To me, hitting a 100 crosscourt backhands in a row was silly because I would never do that in a match. I needed to randomize it by hitting some deep, some angled, all with different speeds and spins. I share that same thought about iron play. Because we seldom hit the same approach shots hole after hole, I prefer to practice irons randomly.
