I'm getting married this fall and I'm thinking of having a small'ish golf tournament the day before for all the guys coming into town for the wedding. I'd like to have some cart gifts like personalized tees or something silly and then maybe pass out some prizes at the reception including a little mini trophy.

My question is, with it being difficult to determine handicaps, etc... does anyone know a good format for a tournament? Is it just easier to play straight up gross/net stroke play or maybe combine the guys into 2-person teams or what? Any advice is welcome. Thanks!

Play a scramble. Try to pair guys who play well with guys who don't play well. Ask people to tell you their approximate score (on a par 70 or 71 or 72 course, not executive courses) and go by that.

In a scramble format, everyone usually contributes and it's kind of fun for everyone, even the better golfers and especially the sucky ones, to shoot near or under par.

Yeah, I work at a golf course, and most of the people that do these things play scrambles. It gets everyone involved and everyone really has a fun time at them...especially with alcohol present :). I would go with Iacas' choice this time.

Another format is the Las Vegas scramble. In this format all the players on the team hit a tee shot, they pick the best shot, each player hits from that spot and plays their own ball in from there. You can record the best score or the two best scores which ever you choose. Better players prefer it to a regular scramble because they get to play their own ball more often. Its a good format for less skilled players because they get to play from the better players drive most of the time.
