I have to go with Jack because of who he was competing against at the time. If you put Jack first or second and Tiger in the other spot, the majority of the rest of the top 10 would be players that Jack competed against. Just my two cents.

That argument has been put before but not as well, I think.

Nicely done.

Thanks guys. I will do my best to make sure future posts are so well received.

the first book i ever had on golf was by the golden bear, it helped me so much to get started in the game at age 13. however, i like the effect tiger has had on the game over such a long time, unfortunatley 2010 hasnt been good at all and sadly probably has crucified his chance of equaling jacks record of majors....tiger is my favourite tough

I believe that Jack was able to sustain his greatness while balancing family and other business interests, so my nod goes to Jack ... now 7 to 10 years down the road Tiger may prove me wrong, but that's where I stand today on the Jack vs. Tiger debate.

Jack Nicklaus was an amazing athlete and competitor. I would love to see how he would do today with modern technology

Me too, but I'd really like to see the current bunch with persimmon and balata! Tiger would fare okay I am sure-he practices with persimmon and has said if it was up to him, golf would be persimmon and balata.

Wow guys, I started this thread 4 years, ago, I took a 3 year break only to come back to this thread (looking up ways to play on Nationwide) and this might be one of the most successful threads on this forum.

Went from a Highschool Junior to now a College Junior, yet this thread is still alive! I just wanted to thank everyone!

It's because the answer keeps changing.

that is true, none the less, i feel proud of to be the thread starter and to comeback 4 years later - haha has to be on the list of petty achievements

I have not been watching golf for very long, but some of the stuff Tiger does is unbelievable. I would like to see how Jack would play with the new technology of ball and clubs.

how about tiger's mental game circa 2000? and how about swing mechanics, and just brute force? I feel like tiger gets the nod there

however in the achievement category jack wins, but i've always been a firm believe for the majority of sports out there, that golf has evolved and the competition is much greater - most people counter argue with the technology and i understand, but i just think swing mechanics are more pure now than ever

The golf swings are a lot better now because today's pros get WAY more coaching than the guys in Jack's prime. But, I would take a guy like Trevino against most of Tiger's contemporaries because he knew how to win. Today's pros make so much money, they don't have to worry about winning. Seems to me that the cream of the crop in Jack's day were just tougher. And now, I think the Europeans just play tougher than the Americans. Tiger may surpass Jack's 18 wins, but no way he passes the 19 seconds. And, no way he designs nearly as many quality golf courses!

Just finished reading Golfer's Greatest Championship The 1960 US Open in which Tommy Bolt was asked who was greater - Jack or Ben Hogan. His response was that Hogan. In support of his opinion he noted that he has seen Nicklaus watch Ben practice, but had never seen Ben watch anyone, what does that tell you.

    • No rain while I was out (9am to 11:30am). Fairly pleasant for a late November day in the Mitten.
    • Day 56 - 2024-11-25 Did the BAD Challenge and hit a bunch more other little shots. This was one of the closer shots.
    • 70 today. The number looks good but, the course is a par 67 (5,110 yards, 64.3/115.). While the 70 took quite a few good shots to achieve, I am not counting that as shooting my age.
    • Played our town’s executive course this morning. Everything is closing but for now Huron Hills remains open. #13 is shaped like an upside down backwards L (dogleg left). Only 231 yard par 4. Dogleg has a tree guarding the corner and a sand bunker guards the green for those cutting the dogleg. Tiny green. About 10 years ago or more I would try to cut the dogleg. The hole is so short that even if one tangled with the tree or was bunkered, par was likely and birdie was still on the table. Now in my 70’s, I just hit it straight and try to wedge it close for birdie. Today I screwed up and pulled my drive. I wandered around a bit when my ball was not in the bunker. Finally located it on the approach to the green. Almost chipped in and tapped in the 2 inches for birdie. Best unintentional shot of the week. 😲
