Ah the Red. Great course, awesome opening hole. One of these years I am going to get back up there and play those courses again. The Green has some great holes as well, #2, #9, #17 come to mind. What a great complex Bethpage is, I really do miss it.

PS - Good luck on your opening round.

I'm down to a 10 handicap. At this rate, I'll get to scratch at 90 years old!

Red 1 and 18 are great holes. Oh well.

Green fees went up too. I think $5 a round.

Well I played this morning and got moved up to 7am.Froze my ass off but its the Red so I smiled as I walked. They have 1&18 par 3s as I said and most of the hospitality tents are either up or are being put up.They had some people playing the Black as a practice round but it was to damn cold to walk over to see who it was. They also made par 3s on the 18 of the Green course but I am not sure about #1 over there. As I stated before The Black will open on 4/15 for a one shot for everyone play before the open.By the way the red was in OK shape the greens were not to good shape compared to some out east courses I have played in the last 2 weeks.

Some of the holes on Blue were aerated.

I played Thursday morning and noticed a number of people in suits, heading over to the clubhouse. Saw a couple of SUVs with equipment logos. I wonder what kind of meeting it was?

I am thinking of going out to Montauk on Thursday if the weather forecast looks good as the Downs is one of my favorites also.Played The Red again on Monday and got 13 in before the rains got me.Belive it or not I was second group out {speedy Bill was first}and I played as a single BY MY SELF.Its been many years since I had the course there all to my self but quess the forecast scared everyone away.Course was in much better shape than last week.

Is Kevin Smith still a pro at Montauk Downs?

If so and you go out there, ask him if he remembers "The Great Pete" and Mark who caddied at Tam O'Shanter when he was an assistant pro there, in the late 70's, early 80's,.

I'm sure he remembers Pete who is a teaching pro now on Long Island.

I guess I won't be going to Bethpage until after the open since it sounds like a mess for now. Damn NY taxes hiking up rates on green fees.

They turned Green #1, #18 into par 3s. They put a temp green on #10.
Red #1, #18 are par 3s, #5 tee moved up about 100 yards.
I think Blue #1 is a par 3.
Yellow is the only untouched course.

At least they didn't raise the range rates.

    • First round at Quail Ridge: 47 + 47 = 94 *Note: It was 25+ mph winds with gust in the 35+ mph. It was also around 58 degrees. I felt like I was out in Oregon. The greens were very firm.  Driver was decent. It didn't cause me an issues.  Irons were the biggest issue. Just low point control was lacking. Mostly on the chunky side. Also, my irons were routinely 20-30 yards shorter than normal. Even on holes with a cross wind, the ball was just dying. We played an extra 9 holes after the first 18, and the wind died down by then. I stepped into a 9 iron, and it came up 15 yards short. I have no clue what is going on. I should not be hitting 9 irons 140 yards when I am hitting my driver 300 to 310 yards.  Warmup didn't give me much confidence. I just kept shanking every other iron shot. I didn't shank an iron during the round. I just felt all out of sorts today. Coordinate felt off.  yea, I have no idea if I am purposely slowing down my swing to feel my downswing piece. Again, I hit a decent 9 iron and lost 15 yards of carry. I hope this is just an off day.
    • Day 565 - 2026-04-19 Wanted to get home to do some spring cleaning type stuff, so I practiced for about seven or eight minutes and got my butt home. Just backswing stuff, mostly, with freezers and a little downswing feel. Liking the new big mirror I have.

    • Well that's about the dumbest thing I've read today.
