Hello,

I thought I understood club fitting a little bit, but maybe not. I just went through an online fitting at golfsmith that is obviously just based on measurements and I was hoping someone could explain this to me.

My basic measurements:

I'm 6'3
Wrist to floor measures 33.5"
Hand measures 8.25"
Longest Finger 3.5"

So I'm a pretty tall guy with big hands. The fitting program spit out that I need clubs that are:

Shaft- -1/4 Inch Shorter
Lie Angle- -1Β° Flat
Grip Size- +1/32 Inch

I get the grip size but doesn't a taller than average player usually need longer clubs and a more upright lie angle. I could of sworn that when I was fitted 4 years ago for my last set that it came back 1" longer shafts and at least 1 degree upright.

Now I'm really confused. Anyone care to try and explain this??

I'm not even remotely close to being an expert, but here is what I think is going on. I think your WTF measurement is disproportionate to hour height. The lower your arms hang the flatter and shorter the club unless you reach way out to the ball.

Now that said I would never order clubs based on a Golfsmith online tool because it can't possibly account for a persons unique body type and swing characteristics.

I went through the Golfsmith online custom fitter and I'm 6-1 with wrist to floor at about 34" and hand size basically the same as yours. It gave me regular shaft length and also that 1/32" grip size, though 1/32" is pretty small.

Seems like you have longer arms and the customizer is shortening your shaft length, which I guess makes sense. But as it's been said earlier, you're probably better off and going in and getting fitted in person.

Even if these measurements were the case, I would completely ignore it until you actually hit a golf club. The most simple reasons are:

1) No one knows what your posture is. You can have minimal knee bend and be really upright or visa versa. This would affect lie angle and length of club.

2) If you order clubs, to be customized to these standards, do they refund your money if wrong? What about a waiting period? Do you want to wait two weeks for equipment that is ill-suited?

Hello,

I'm going to second what almost everyone has said and tell you to disregard that "fitting" and go get fit by a real clubmaker. Those numbers are undoubtably based on the assumption that you have perfect posture and that your swing is perfectly on plane and there are no moves in your swing that change that plane. What part of PA do you live in? If you're anywhere near my area, I have a phenomenal place for you to go to get fit.

I am 5'8" and my clubs are 1.5 upright and standard length. I agree with the consensus here.

You must have some seriously long arms....probably throwing off their "equation".

I can't see how shorter clubs would help someone 6'3" at all!!! I would think you'd want more upright than 1 degree also. I also suggest getting somebody well versed in clubfitting to take a look for you.

For what it's worth, I'm 6'5" and recently ordered a set of irons from a guy who used the PING method as well as his personal experience (40 years doing this stuff) and the numbers he came up with were more upright than I'd ever guess (or that the various web places said). The irons came in yesterday and I was able to game them...albeit under huge winds......he appears to have been right on the mark. There is no substitute to hitting the various clubs with differing measurements. Getting the wrong size grip is no biggie to replace later...just the expense of doing so....but screw around and wrong lie angles (that can't be adjusted to your spec) or get them too short.....argghhhhhhh.

Good luck!!!!

So, say I needed longer irons and got fit and ordered them and they were great and worked out. Should I just use those same measurements to order my wedges then or should I go back and get fitted all over again for the wedges?

And just because I need longer irons, doesn't mean I need a longer driver, right?

Obviously I want to get fitted for everything properly, but these are just a few general questions I had.

It's your wrist to floor, which is the same as my daughter who is only 5'6" tall. You've got some long arms, or shorter legs, I guess. Either way, or both, that's the key. In fact, if you look in Wishon's book, cited above, he gives a good example of a very tall person who needed shorter clubs.

I agree with all who say don't go by the online form. There is still the dynamic element, i.e. is your swing more upright or flat, because that can change what you might do with length, and lie, for that matter.

As for Poulter, just above me, I know with Titleist and Ping, in my experiences, the same specs for the irons have dictated the wedges.

I wouldn't necessarily go longer on the driver, and some of the recent thinking is that drivers are getting way too long for most of us, i.e. if the "standard" 45" or so driver is the "standard" and you need +1/2 on your clubs, don't get a 45 1/2" driver - you probably won't be able to control it. Wishon, cited above in another post, suggests most of us would be better off with shorter drivers and most pros average driver length is shorter than the longer drivers being pushed by the manufacturers. The length on most drivers you pull off the rack is not really "standard", it's too long.

Your iron specs should work fine for your wedges. But... NOOOOO is the answer to needing a longer driver. In my opinion, most amateurs should have shorter drivers. This would lead to more consistent solid contact, which is where distance REALLY comes from. Forgot swing speed, loft, shaft flex, driver design... if you can nut the ball every time, you will hit the ball further, and you just might find it in the short grass too.
