So I went to Dicks and was offered to hit a couple Taylormade irons in there practice range, so what the heck why not and I gave it a shot. Apprently what I thought was a pretty improved swing in my standards, the guy there told me that my swings to "over the top", or something like that when i make contact with the ball. Apprently I hit a draw and I got improve my grip. My grip I thought seemed to be improved from last year, but apperently not. I link my fingers in my grip, my top hand(left hand)'s thumb kind of tucks into my right hand, and my right thumb curls over the shaft, maybe a picture would help. I dont play any other sports that would have an influence on my game so im kind of lost. I dont really have the money now to afford lessons, so I figured maybe you guys could help me out a little?
-Sorry for the horrible explaination on my grip, i thought it was an "average grip"

grip should be irrelevant. If this guy is claiming you're too over the top from just watching you hit a few irons into a net then it must be a significant motion. If its really bothering you just try to flatten out your swing a bit.

You can't hit a draw and come over the top at the same time, those two would contradict eachother. A draw is a ball starting to the right and spin back towards the target. A swing coming over the top will come from the outside to the inside.

If the club comes from the outside to the inside of the ball, it will launch to the left of the target no matter what position the clubface is at. A square clubface would spin it towards the target, a fade. A closed clubface would spin it further to the left, a pull-hook. And an open clubface would cause it to spin past the target line and over to the right side, a slice.

What helps me when I work on my swing plane is to imagine my hands are at the same place at the takeaway and the downswing. I turn the torso, hands come inside, raise arms, arms fall, pass the body, club follow. More than anything, this thought helped me making the move where I'm coming from the inside to the outside, or square to the target plane.

Also, taking the club away on the inside and not flattening it out at the top.

    • Day 4, 1/2/26.  Played 18 today;  didn't get a chance to warm up (had I known the range was closed, I'd have hit balls at home first).  Played okay, 92 with three balls in the water.  It was raining for more than half the round and I didn't quite appreciate before today just how much I benefit from roll on both drives and approach shots.  I did not adapt well to this change until about hole 15, which is something I have to figure out.
    • Day 143 1-2 Arch wrist in downswing. Having a SLIGHT cup in the lead wrist at the top now. Only paused swings with some rehearsals before swinging at ball.  Used foam ball.
    • Day 459 - 2026-01-02 Had two guys on GEARS Hybrid, so I hopped on afterward (I'm going to do this a lot more often now). So… I've signed myself up for another month of backswing work in two ways: A little more extension of the trail elbow (got into the upper 90s) Less pelvis turn (low 50s).
    • Day 31 (2 Jan 26) - Usual Friday men’s group shootout - good day of shot making  as most shots were right on line to the target point.  Putter and green reads were solid with some great par saves and a really tricky birdie.
    • Day 13 - 2026-01-02 One hour short game work. Chipping balls to different targets, compass putting drill with 2-3% slope.
