Hello, all. I just started playing last year, and I haven't played a round since last season. I have been hitting the drive range a lot since the weather has gotten better. I've been fairly happy with the consistency of my irons. I don't have to have nearly as strong a grip as when I started, and the irons are heading 'straighter'. There is also some sort of gap differences from PW to 5 iron, which is good. My 7 iron distance is about 140. The problem is that my Driver isn't much more than that when I hit it straight. It looks good going up, but then just drops right around 150 yds. I've had one 'fundamentals' lesson, and considering another lesson.

Any suggestions, please?

Honestly, I would love to help, but without seeing your specific swing I don't think myself or anyone else on the forum is going to be able to help you. The best thing to do would be to find a local teaching pro (a PGA professional if possible) and let them look at your swing. Most likely they will see the problem and be able to tell you what the problem is, although they probably can not correct it immediately. If I'm not mistaken I think April is 'Free Swing Analysis Month'. I think you can find a PGA pro and they will do a 10 or 15 swing analysis for free, but it might not be this month.

On a forum like this most people want to help but you'll get so many answers that are completely different it might make things worse. For your sake, see a professional. If you're lucky it's something that's easily corrected and you'll be breaking par in no time (or at least breaking less windows ).

I agree with the above poster. Tough to analyze without looking at your swing.

If you have just started playing golf about a year ago you are playing pretty well, congratulations.

I would practice the basic aspects of golf and that is the following:

1) grip
2) posture
3) stance
4) alignment
5) swing plane
6) tempo

review the link to these helpful video below and most importantly if you want to lower your scores, practice more than you play and spend 95% of your practice on your short game, which is the following:

1) putting
3 foot putts
10 -20 foot putts
2) chip shot
around the green
from 10-20 yards from the green
3) pitch shots
from 30-50 yards
from 50 - 100 yards

and before long you will beating your buddies because they are still practicing their driver and irons at the driving range.

How high would you say the ball flight is on the driver shots that go straight and 150. And, when you say the ball goes straight does it end up on the fairway or is the ball flight completely straight? For example, no slices or hooks.

Thanks, everyone. I understand about the golf pro analysis. I live in a very small town, and I had a lesson with the pro, but I don't think I like him. I probably should go ahead and give him another chance since it's only $35 for the lesson.

The driver shots are fairly high. Not sure how high they should be. They shoot off pretty, and then seem to drop straight down.

When I say straight, it isn't perfectly straight. I've only been on the range so far this year, but straight to me is right at what I'm aiming at to 10 or so yards right of what I'm aiming at, with a slight slice. So on the fairway to answer your question.

Slices steal distance from drives. The bigger the slice, the more distance lost. This could be one reason you don't have as much distance on your drives.

Sounds like you are popping it up which can happen when you come in too steep with a driver. Move the ball further forward (towards the hole) in your stance and stand just slightly further from the ball. Keep adjusting those two things just a little at a time until you find yourself contacting it differently, hopefully more solidly.

    • Played Musgrove Mill GC today. 72.3/155. First round in 4 weeks and shot 44-39. 2 triple bogies on the front and horseshoed 4 putts today. Overall, 10 fairways, 8 GIR and 31 putts.  Set a goal today to par the 3 toughest holes (4, 18 and 9) and birdie 10 or 12 (which I have never birdied). Parred 4, 9 and birdied 10. Crushed my drive on 18 and had 139 left, but in casual water. Dropped back a little ways and took an extra club. Hit my 8-iron well but it came up short. Bunker shot from wet sand left me an 18’ for my goal. Read the break well but perhaps an inch too much break, and a touch heavy on the speed. Ball circled the hole 270* and tapped in for a bogey. Handicap dropped 0.1.
