Thanks for all the new responses everyone

I play a hybrid and so does more than half the PGA tour players who all can hit a 3 iron about as far as most of us can hit our driver but choose to use a more versatile club I'll tell you that you'll love your 3 or 4 hybrid when you got a long shot out of the fairway, rough or bunker I just this past weekend hit my 3 hybrid 215yds over water to about 20ft ( rarley ever happens) but would never happen with a 3 iron the game won't all of the sudden become easy because you have a hybrid or 2 but do your self a favor and look at into getting 1 or 2 you'll be glad you did matter of fact go try a 3 iron next to a 3 hybrid and see for your self it may be the best for you.

yeah, that reasoning for not wanting to play hybrids is just foolish. if you've played hybrids before and not liked them, then it is reasonable to pass on such a set, but to do so because you want to develop your game doesn't make sense. here is the low down on hybrids...they are simply easier to hit and more forgiving than long irons. Usually when you hear those terms used to describe a club you automatically assume that the ease and forgiveness come at the price of playability and workability...but that is simply not true for hybrids. the statements made in the previous two sentences are what make hybrids good candidates to replace long irons

it seems like your aversion to hybrids is that you think they are super game improvement irons in your bag mixed in with the game improvement irons you are hoping to put in your bag. you plan on playing a lot and hope to get better, and you feel like as you do, you will want to replace your hybrids with regular irons. this i think is the wrong way to perceive hybrids. while some super game improvement irons today seem to resemble hybrids (huge club heads with wide soles to get the cg low and back) and even use the name hybrid in their names, traditional hybrids are not super game improvement irons. (i really hope that sentence makes as much sense as it did in my head).

to be sure, think of hybrids as a completely different type of club used to fill in the distance gaps between say a 5 iron and 3 wood or whatever the case may be. A lot of my buddies that shoot close to par or under consistently really like hybrids because of their versatility, and since they can hit a 3 hybrid to cover the gap between a 3 wood and a 4 iron, they can carry an extra wedge (on that note, i should cite Anthony Kim b/c he plays no fairway woods, just one hybrid...an adams at that)

hope this opens your eyes to trying hybrids...if you don't like them after hitting them, thats another story, but just don't assume they are an easy way out of learning to hit long irons cause you'll have to learn to hit hybrids just the same

ya gotta be kidding me with the hybrids... this game is hard enough already... why not take advantage of modern equipment... i think your approach to the game is admirable... but come on... the way you are thinking... you should bust out the persimmons and clubs with wooden shafts so that if you can hit those clubs well... you would have a more solid game... like others have said... tour players hit hybrids... dont think an equipment advantage will make you a terrible player or a cheater... i see guys on the course that play blades cuz of their egos shooting high scores... and ive seen really good single digit/scratch guys gaming sgi/gi clubs

Well you're all certainly more knowledgeable than I, so I'll definitely look into a hybrid. I'm just of the mind set that if I make the game too easy for myself (by that I don't mean the game would be easy, just not as difficult as with more difficult equipment) I won't learn as much or as fast as I'd like to. Perhaps I'm wrong and a hybrid would help me do just that.

And an old set of wooden clubs sounds fun :P

hybrids definitely won't make the game easier by any means...hybrids alone can't overcome the deficit of bad mechanics, so you'll have to develop your swing properly anyways. here is how hybrids will be helpful to you both now and in the future as your game improves:

for most beginners, the tendency with long irons is to hit up and try to lift the ball up to compensate for the lack of loft on the club. this results either topped or chunked shots depending on your swing. the proper way to hit irons of course is to hit down on the ball which results in greater transfer of kinetic energy from the club to the ball by means of compression. hybrids too should make contact with the ball on the downswing...this is actually quite a bit more difficult than it sound and really what separates good ball strikers from the rest of us.

the advantage of hybrids is since they share some characteristics of characteristics with woods, is that they respond well when on the upswing, meaning less shanks as a beginner. obviously it will be much shorter than a well struck ball, but at least you'll be in teh same fairway. as your game progresses and you consistently strike the ball well with your hybrids, you'll be able to start working the ball in both directions, much like you would be able to with an iron. the mechanics of working a ball are the same with a hybrid and and iron so you won't have to sacrifice learning how to do it properly.

Does anyone think the MX200s are a tad heavy? My golf instructor thinks my current clubs (10+ year old Cobra knockoffs my dad's friend has been letting me borrow) are heavy and I swear the MX200s are heavier than them...

I did personally. That was after swing the MP52's for a bit first....so, could be just that. I know the clubs I have now are lighter than the 200s.

Did you give the 52's a swing? I know you have an opinion about the Hybrids, but take a look at the MP Fli Hi's. I wrote a review about my Fli Hi 2.

I'm really getting interested in the MP-52s. I know theyre a step up, but I think theyre still regarded as having some forgiveness and the MX-200 just feel abnormally heavy (maybe that helps with swinging?) ... I don't know... It's still going to be a month or two before I buy; so I've got some time to play around and see how they feel.

Again, thanks to everyone for all their input!
