I was playing the best golf of my life last summer hitting my r5 Dual N with a stock shaft (10.5 degree)...hitting it very well.

I then got caught up in the TM marketing campaign and bought a Burner at the end of the season when they went on sale. I figured if I was slotting the 6 year old driver, man I could really rock a new one. I also traded in my r5 in the process. I did not hit the Burner as well and want to find something that is comparable to my old club. I don't like the light shaft or the closed look at address.

I plan to go get fitted and make a informed decision this time, but with so many of the 08 Models on sale...I think I am going to trade in my Burner.

I am looking at the Rapture, the r7 Limited or anything else someone might suggest in the 200-250 ball park

I've played a number of years with a Taylor Made R580 XD and loved it...I still have it. Recently, i decided to get a new driver and also tried the new TM Burner...to my suprise I didn't like it as well as I thought I would. I ended up trying and purchasing the '09 Cleveland Launcher...It is a little more than you've said you wanted to spend, but it's worth trying out on a launch monitor...I actually prefered the Launcher and Callaway's Diablo and FT aboved the Burner, considering I am a Taylor Made fan...If I was you, I'd get on a launch monitor and try out plenty of drivers...have fun.

Wow, That describes me exactly! I had an r5 as well and I loved it. I think the dumbest thing i did was get rid of it to get a tour burner, thinking it would be even better, but no. I would suggest looking on ebay for another r5 or the r7. They are pretty cheap now that the r9 is out.

I have to be the only guy on the planet who hated his R5. I played it for about a month and couldn't wait to get rid of it. My buddy, who bought his the same day, is STILL playing and loving it. Maybe I just got a dud.

I still play a Taylor Made R5 TP driver 10.5 with Diamana shaft 83 grams. with a magnetic headcover.

You can pick one up on ebay for $168 including shipping brand new. You have to decide if you like the 83 gram shaft.

I have played a Cleveland Launcher Ti460 the last 2 years and thought I'd start looking for a new driver because the Cleveland was balooning on me. After a couple hours of hitting drivers I was not real impressed with any of the new drivers except for the Ping Rapture but it was more than I was willing to pay. I asked the guy working with me if he had any of last year models and he said he had a few 2007 TM Burners. I was skeptical at first because I did not like the feel at all of the 2009 Burner, it felt terrible through impact. My first 5 balls with the 07 and I could tell a big difference between it and the 09, much better feel and felt more comfortable during the swing. I got rid of the balooning, picked up a small draw (unusual for me with a driver), and added about 8 yards to my drives with the 07 TM Burner. The other good thing was I got it for $179 brand new. If you haven't yet, give the 07 TM Burner a try, you might be as suprised as I was.

Also try the Ping G 10....

The ping drivers and the TM tour burner come stock with longer shafts than the r5-r7 line, so maybe that has something to do with it. Its a little harder to get your face square at impact with a longer shaft, so make sure to look at that if you liked the shorter shaft. I accually love the new burner, and hate the R5 my brother plays.... just gotta try them all for yourself.

Yeah in the launch monitor I consistently hit the ping g10 10 yards further than the new burner

It looks closed at address because its designed to be played farther forward in your stance. The R5 sets up square somewhere closer to the center of your stance, while the burner starts looking square somewhere around my front foot.

I have to be the only guy on the planet who hated his R5. I played it for about a month and couldn't wait to get rid of it.

Nope, I hated it,too. Didn't like the R7 or the R9 either.... thats why its a good idea to get fit and demo clubs before you commit.

I know, I did and I did. Sometimes "virtual" shotmaking doesn't transfer to real world golf. Nets and monitors just don't do it for me. Now, unless I have the opportunity for a real golf demo, I won't buy it.

If you liked the r5 then you should love the r7 superquad. They are shaped the same, just the superquad has moveable weights. Its prettycheap now, although some stores dont carry them. You should find one though if you go to a sports store (Sports Authority, Dicks) rather than a golf or pro shop. Or you could use Ebay

I'm with you, for some reason I could never hit my R5. It didn't seem to have a middle. Even when I put one out there it felt as if I'd miss hit it. Much happier with my Tour Burner.

    • I think part of it is there hasn't been enough conclusive studies specific to golf regarding block studies. Maybe the full swing, you can't study it because it is too complicated and to some degree it will fall into variable or random.
    • Going one step stiffer in the golf shaft, of the same make and model will have minor impact on the launch conditions. It can matter, it is a way to dial in some launch conditions if you are a few hundred RPM off or the angle isn't there. Same with moving weights around. A clubhead weights 200-220 grams. You are shifting a fraction of that to move the CG slightly. It can matter, again its more about fine tuning. As for grip size, this is more personal preference. Grip size doesn't have any impact on the swing out of personal preference.  You are going to spend hundreds of dollars for fine tuning. Which if you want, go for it. I am not sure what your level of play is, or what your goals in golf are.  In the end, the golf swing matters more than the equipment. If you want to go to that level of detail, go find a good golf club fitter. ChatGPT is going to surface scan reddit, golfwrx, and other popular websites for the answers. Basically, it is all opinionated gibberish at this point.

    • Well the first advice I would give is to look at your swing. If you are swing out to in, it may be difficult to fix your misses with club adjustments. They would only be a bandaid. I use midsize grips because I have long fingers and I feel I have more control with them. I also have tinkered with shaft length and swing weight. But I know when I miss it’s because my swing was off.
