Cleveland Golf Tour Action Set, good for newbie??

Hello all,

I am relatively new to golfing and have resolved to play more. I want to make golfing my go to sport/hobby, I used to play alot of basketball but it's hell on my knees and I can't quite keep up anymore...

Anyways, I've only played a handful of games and usually borrow friend's clubs when we hit at a range. I would like to get my own set. I've read many of the newbie threads here, and looked online at various golf shop sites and ebay. I've also visited Roger Dunn and other sporting goods chains. At first I considered the Top Flite Xl set because they are cheap and also made by Callaway. Although they have recieved decent reviews on various opinion sites, they are not highly regarded among golf forums. Cleveland seems to have a good reputation and I came across these at the Sports Authority of all places. HERE is the link to the same item on their website. There are not many opinions in these on the net. What are your opinions/thoughts? Should I just buy a used set on ebay?? I love the Nikes and some Callaway stuff, but they are quite expensive.

Go down to your Play It Again sports or get on Craigs List or Ebay and get yourself a set of used clubs for $100 to $200 (or less). They won't be the latest and greatest, but the money you save can be plowed into lessons with a good teacher. That way you can start off properly without ingraining bad habits that can stick with you for years.

If you have the need to dump money, test out a hundred putters and spend the money on the one that feels and works the best for you. A deadly putter is worth more in value and will positively effect your game more than the highest priced fancy full swing clubs you can find.

My previous set was the cleveland TA5 with the Stiff SLDG. I really liked them but I was hooking them too much and really wanted something more compact. But I highly recommend those for a beginner and you can probably get a set for less than 150 on ebay. I sold mine to a buddy for 150 and included a really nice gap wedge.

I looked at that set. You can do alot better and cheaper by piecing it together yourself. I would buy every club off ebay. Get a driver with at least 10 degrees of loft. A decent 5 wood, a set of used irons and a wedge or two and a putter you like. I think you could do this for 400 or less on ebay and have good older clubs in good condition.

That's a real nice set. I love the weighting on the irons and the putter as well. The driver and 3 wood would eventually be replaced by me as there are more forgiving cheap drivers out there. Which Sports Authority is this?

I like everybody's suggestion of going used and getting lessons. The other possability is to look into a golf class / group lesson. Often times they will provide you will the requiste golf clubs and help you to start grooving a swing properly. After that, you will have some idea of what you want in clubs and can go out and get a proper set to start with.

Also, have a chat with friends that play the game, often times people have an old set / secondary set and a good friend might let you borrow them for a few weeks for you to go and take lessons with. If you are really close, maybe you can borrow them for the season and get to know exactly what you want in golf clubs.

It's an addicting game, and it isn't the cheapest hobby ever.

Thanks everone for your informative replies. I do plan on taking some lessons with a buddy of mine who is also a beginner, just as soon as he can get some free time from his business. I went to some more golf shops today as well as a Golfsmith and it seems all brick and mortar stores just can't compete pricewise withe internet sites and ebay. I'll concentrate on the web, although it scares me a bit to learn that there are actually counterfeit clubs! I never would have thought that was possible, is there anything the chinese won't duplicate???

I like this Cleveland set because of convenience. OTD it would cost me about $605 because I have a coupon code. I don't know if I could put together comparable package of new quality namebrand components (irons, driver, bag, etc) that would fit in this price range. I'm looking at a few used Callaway and Nike sets on ebay, and my preference is to save money, so we'll see how that goes. Thanks for the offer of your used set but I'm a Righty.

Any Sports Authority should have them, just go to your nearest one and they are displayed prominently in the golf section.

I have those irons right now... what do you think of them for like a 8 handicapper ( need 2 change my sig ) and i have regular true tempers in them. Hit my 5 iron like 150 yrds ( we use metres so its a estimate ). ?????

That is an outstanding deal. I was going to suggest a good condition used set but for that price, I'd get it. I have not ordered from them, but everything I have read says RockBottomGolf.com is first rate.
