Is it really possible to "compress the ball against the ground"?

I've seen this phrase tossed around plenty of times from plenty of sources when referring to an iron shot struck with a descending clubhead. But is it really possible to compress the ball against the ground when you're hitting it with an object that is pointing away from the ground (like any lofted golf club)? And would a shot that was actually hit into the ground really come off with as consistent a trajectory as solidly struck iron shots do?

I have a real problem believing this is physically possible. It's true that the downward movement of the clubhead would impart a downward force on the back of the ball. But since the loft of the face of the club that is actually striking the ball is going to force the ball away from the ground in a big way, it seems to me that the other smaller downward force could only increase backspin or slightly offset the upward force imparted by the loft of the club.

Someone set me straight if I'm wrong, but I think this is a logical fallacy that just makes it easier for people to imagine making the right type of swing.

It's just a feeling. If you really compressed the ball into the ground with a metal stick going 90MPH you'd bury it.

This topic has had the hell beat out of it.

Okay, never mind then. I guess I didn't look closely enough for other threads on this...

That's what I thought. Maybe it doesn't matter, but I've even seen this used in one of Tiger's instructional articles and it seems very misleading to me.

Yes: if you top it.

But yeah, it's just a mental image. Given post #4, I don't think you'll mind if I close this one off.

    • Three great shots from McIlroy's group (Smith and the US Am Champ) on 12.  The amateur won closest to the pin, although I doubt the group had a bet going.
    • I thought complaining about Fleetwood's appearance was my schtick   For real though, I agree with you, and when I see that, especially in a major, I'm confused.  When I play in a multi-day event at my club, I plan my clothing in advance because I want to look my best.   If no one else, their clothing sponsors should do this for them.  I think Nike used to do this with their stable -- I used to look forward to seeing their posts on the Facebook before majors to see how Tiger and Anthony Kim and friends would be dressed. Meanwhile, Jason Day is dressed fairly blandly today.  Who saw that coming?
    • The hell is Thomas Fleetwood wearing? He looks like a divorced dad from 1998. Even the shoes are hideous
    • I was wondering this and haven't seen it on today's broadcast OR yesterday's, but apparently Cabrera did show up.  He currently has the third highest score for the week and is playing his last hole of this year's event.  I'm not particularly keen to see him, but I was wondering if he was present, and he seems to be.
    • Hatton hit 18 GIR.  That's incredible.   Rory's tee shot on #8 reminds me of a TV show, Get Smart, that I enjoyed watching as a kid.  The protagonist would often say "missed me by that much."  Rory missed avoiding the bunker by that much.
