Basically I haven't played for a couple years and just got back to playing around a month or two ago. Noticed my iron work degraded immensely with unintentional draws/hooks and decided to go in-depth with figuring out my swing, which I've never really done before. Shot some video today and I don't really like what I see, but my irons have been improving a lot. Basically just looking for thoughts on anything obviously wrong with my swing at this point. Do note that I'm pretty tall, around 6'1", and my clubs aren't exactly a fit for tall people (didn't notice until watching, but I have to hunch down quite a bit to feel comfortable swinging). Also, this is a 9 iron (anything lower and I'd be hitting onto a highway. Found that out the hard way. Oops!). Anyway, any advice/critique/whatever else would be greatly appreciated!

I think he has to bend down a little more because like he said his clubs are not fit for a taller person.

I think it's critical that you get fitted for clubs, possibly a solid used set of irons that you can get basically anywhere for a fair price. If you continue to swing that hunched over, I think you run the risk injuring your back.

Hm, I was hoping that wasn't going to be an answer but I guess it's unavoidable. Thanks for the opinion(s), guess I'll have to spring for some irons soon.

I would suggest experiementing with keeping your wrists quite(er), especially at the top of your backswing. In my experience the more wristy I get at the top of the swing the more inconsistant my ball striking becomes. When everything comes together right I can really hit it, but too much wrists seems to make it harder for me to get the club back to square at impact.

If you have junior clubs then yes i would advise new irons. However assuming you have adult clubs they should be the right size. I am 6'0 and use standard length. Tiger is 6'1 - 6'2 and uses standard length. Of course there are slight differences in arm length, leg length etc. but i wouldn't say its something you need to purchase if they are adult clubs.

Like everyone said you are hunched over. Try bending at the hips instead of the back. Work with a mirror until you look similar to the pros you see on tv. It will feel very awkard at first and you will hit shots thin but keep with it.

Second your club face is DEAD shut at the top, this is where your hooks would come from. Your grip is very strong. It is possible to play this way, but you need to make sure you fire your hips as hard as you can from the top of the backswing and feel like you are not releasing the club through impact. If you would like to be more consistent try weakening your grip (i.e. turn your left hand counter clockwise) there is a lot of info about this online and it may be worth weakening that grip at least a little.

Good luck!

Tim- IMHO, I'm not convinced that you need fitted clubs at 6'1", but would recommend finding a local teaching pro to help with your set up.
1. Your grip seems too strong and you're laying the club off at the top.
2. Your address position is too hunched over. Push you butt out and bend forward at the hips.

Use your video and compare it to a pic from any golf mag, but I'd start with your set-up. Good luck.

On the plus side, it looks like you drilled that ball pretty straight.

I would work on your posture. Use a mirror or sliding glass door to see how you are standing.

I'm down to a 10 handicap. At this rate, I'll get to scratch at 90 years old!

Got a chance to go out on the range and try a more upright posture today, seemed to help a lot with consistency. Just need to get used to setting up like that from now on. Thanks for the tips!

    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).  Courses are starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens are trickier.

    • I have been on a roll in November. Today was a 77 (69.2/115, 6,050 yards) on a wet course with dew covered bumpy greens. Better greens and I might have shaved a few more strokes off the score.
    • So, it appears to me that everyone is bringing out some version of the zero-torque, or square to square, or torque balanced, putter.  What ever name you want to give it seems like everyone has one of these types of things in their line up now.  It reminds me of about 10 years ago, when everyone had to have a counter-balanced putter in their line-up.  Callaway Media | Videos, Podcasts, & Episodes | Golf Content The Official source for Callaway golf clubs, golf balls and gear.
