I haven't been able to play as much lately and money has been tight, so I traded in my Mizuno mp-30's for a used set of Callaway x-14's. The problem is the offset is KILLING me. I haven't hooked that many iron shots in my life!

So now I'm back in the market for irons with limited capital...so I'm looking for a good used set, and I want little to no offset. Since I'm lefty I can't go and find used clubs at stores and try a bunch out. I'm lucky if they have any lefty clubs at all! Of the new ones I hit, I liked the Ping i10's, the new Taylor Made Burners, Mizuno mp-52's and the Titleist ap2's. Know of any older iron sets that are similar that I can get a better deal on?

would you consider a set of component clubs?

I just ordered a six iron that I am going to try out (should get it together this weekend)

The Powerplay System q2 has all the SGI features you want, with a very limited offset.
http://www.hirekogolf.com/hireko/ord...1184/0/0/0/0/0

Also, the CER 851's from golfworks look like they don't have alot of offset either and they are selling the entire set of heads 3-SW for $40 right now
http://www.golfworks.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_D1225LSET

Both of these are GI/SGI clubs but with limited offset.
At $40 for a set of heads you could easily have a completed set of irons for under $200 and a few hours of labor.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

How many rounds, range sessions? Might just take a little work to adjust. Probably a bad setup (closed at address), common with offset clubs.

I've put in 6 rounds on the new irons, I've had that consistent hook (about 20-30 yards offline with 8 iron!) the whole time and I wasn't getting that earlier in the season with my mp-30's. How would I adjust to take that out of these irons?

You could try opening the club face a little at address....but solving the problem that way could just lead to training your brain to see open at address...

I doubt a 20 - 30 yard hook is caused by offset, more likely shafts are too light, or a serious over the top move on the downswing.

Ironic you mention that because I did the same thing. I played the MP-30's for a year then had our first child so play was limited. I sold the MP-30's and bought a set of X-14's. Played the Cally's for 2 weeks then drove 65 miles and bought my MP-30's back. For those who say that the MP-30 is the worst iron Mizuno ever came out with is nuts. They are very under rated and I won't let them go again. Good luck with your search.

FWIW I have hit the MP-52's and they are an excellent stick. My demo was shafted with PX 5 and they felt very good, but really the only difference that was really noticeable was the 52's ball flight was higher than the 30's. 52's had a little bit bigger sweetspot and maybe a tad more forgiving but it's splitting hairs IMO. You can also get a set of MP-30's on ebay for a very good price right now.

Yeah, the offset isn't going to result in that sort of change. Check your swing or the other parameters of the club.

I agree that the offset definately shouldn't result in a huge hook. Maybe a pull or a smaller hook, but you should be able to figure it out. My guess would be that the shafts are too soft. Anytime I swing clubs with regular flex my great contact shots are dead pulls, but I can straighten it out if I try. With my stiff flex irons there is no miss left... You can see a lot of videos online of people with too soft of flex. The flex of the shaft at impact is crazy to see in slowmotion!

So a simple re-shaft (and making sure my swing isn't messed up somehow) could fix my issues? Well...these issues anyway

It could possibly yes. Were your old clubs a stiffer shaft? Obviously the way to go would be to go get fitted and see what comes out of it.

Ok...it looks like now I'm going to have about $400 to work with on a new(ish) iron set. Someone recommended that I get the Big Bertha Fusions, but I've heard mixed reviews. I'm also eying up a used set of Titleist ap1's (would still be a $$ stretch, but i'm close). I hit the forged set the other day and they were beautiful....the cast version can't be that much different other than feel right?

Cast vs. Forged is kinda like hammering nails with a Sledge vs. Carpenter hammers. Both do the job, but one just feels right.

Aside from that, I actually experienced a similar thing when I bought a SGI set earlier this year. I went from a straight ball flight to a hook with every iron. I got fitted, again, and discovered the problem was 2 fold: 1) The offset impacted, but wasn't the only contributor 2) I need +2 wraps on my grips, which slows the hand turn a little. That and I need +1" because I maintain balance better. So, I went back to my old set and hit them straight. Should be getting my new set of MP52's today!!

I know that a good fitting is in order for these. I had my Mizuno's fitted for me, they didn't play right until I got that done. I went into my golfsmith and they gave me some bit about not being able to adjust the x-14's for me (which I think is a bit of a line, but whatever). I just haven't been impressed with them (the clubs or my local Golfsmith for that matter).

I found a good deal on a used set of Titleist ap-1's so I pulled the trigger on them this morning. They should be a good compromise between my old mp-30's and the x-14s. I'll update y'all when they arrive and I put a few rounds in.

I have a feeling that I'll miss my forged clubs going forward, but until I'm able to put in 30-40 rounds in a season again I think i'll have to pick something that won't drive me crazy with mis-hits.

    • This!!! Shocking how fast I forget this for chipping and pitching because I’m thinking of the other stuffs. This just cleans up contact so much. 🤣🤣🤣
    • I've never used an aid. I dramatically improved my putting with two things. First, I realized I'd let my hands drift too far forward and it was messing up my eye for lining up to my close alignment point on the line to my aim point (I don't use the aim point system but do my reads by finding where I think I should try to hit the ball to for it to end up rolling in the hole). I set up a few cues for myself around setup to make sure my hands were in the right place. Second, I found a stretch on the shitty, thin carpet over concrete in my basement that didn't break. Then I set up two alignment sticks end to end (obviously in a straight line), and laid down a cup on its side at one end. Then I just put a golf ball the same distance from the alignment sticks as the center of the cup and lined up and tried to roll the ball parallel to the alignment sticks into the cup over and over and over. I've been solid at distance control since I got fit for my putter. Ingraining a feel for whether I've lined up correctly when I take a glance at my aim point has dramatically improved my putting. I'm no pro or anything, but I putt well for the number of rounds I get in these days.
    • Day 293: played 18. Really pleased with it - started with 3 bogeys but managed to shoot +5. Hit the ball well overall, and had some really good short game shots.

    • I actually enjoy watching the women players on YT more than the men because I can relate far more to how far they hit it and hence their club selection.  Too many of the guys are bombing it over 300 carry and that makes it difficult for me.  It doesn't hurt that the women are pleasing on the eye, but that is just a bonus.  What draws me to a channel is being able to say I could potentially hit those shots/distances if I practiced a bit (probably LOT) more 🙈
