Heavier Driver Shaft

Whats the difference (is there is any) between a 57 gram shaft and a 67 gram shaft? How does the two compare in accuracy, trajectory, or distance?

Sorry, I was very vague. Yeah, the two shafts have all the same specs, the only difference is the 10 grams. My question is what 10 grams does in the control, distance, and trajectory.

Assuming that you're talking about the same line of shaft model, the lighter shaft is geared toward players with slower swing speed. A light shaft would help them swing the club a little faster. Strong/fast hitters need a heavier shaft to maintain control. Although not always the case, lighter shafts have higher torque, dispersion, feels smoother or whippier depending on who you ask.

They say you should swing the lightest shaft you can control.

I don't like to drop below about 75 grams in a driver shaft - 57 would lead to control issues for me.

So that's one thing that's different: feel and control.

For the rest, well, we'd have to know what shafts you were talking about specifically.

The lighter shaft generally will be a little softer flex even for the same nominal flex. However I looked at the specs for the Proforce V2 (see link) and they claim to be almost identical for the different weights within the same flex.

My driver, a Taylor Made R5 TP has a Diamana 83 gram shaft.

I have been using a Nike Sasquatch Tour 460 with stiff Diamana Blueboard 83g and thought that maybe a lighter shaft would give me faster swing-speed, better control and maybe more distance - so I bought a Titleist 905R with Grafalloy Blue stiff shaft.

Fail.

I can barely get the Titleist past 240 yards - 20 yards shorter than with my heavier Nike/Diamana combination...

Look at the big picture.

All other specs being equal.....

Heavy shaft will feel stiff, lower trajectory, less spin, less club head speed.

However, a lighter shaft will be harder to feel in your swing and easier to spray all over the place.


If you are have 10 shots to hit 1 in the fairway go with a light shaft. If you have 10 shots and you want 10 in the fairway go with a heavy shaft.

A consistent 260 is better than 290, 300, 180, TREES, OB, WATER, 275.
