Hi all,

With my driver i can get about 255 yards, with my wedge only 110 at most. And 165 with my 5 iron.
With my 3 wood i can reach 100-102 mph of clubhead speed.

Do you think irons distance is appropiate compared to the driver one?

I think my iron game needs to improve a lot, specially contact (hitting down, etc...).

Thanks in advance

I'm guessing that's your PW that goes 110. I'm about in those ranges for those distances. My CHS for the driver is in the low 90's. I get 250+ with carry and roll not just carry.

Good drive from me is 250-260, average drive not counting mishits in the 235 range.

5I plays 170

PW plays 115

Since I have no problems with my distances I think you are fine.

I'm not sure, everyone has a different swing speed and trajectory of their impact.

Put it this way, I changed my swing last year and hit ball first, thus compressing it against the ground, and found that I hit every single iron in my bag about 10-15 yards longer.
It's up to you what feels comfortable. Personally I would sacrifice 5-10 yards for less of a draw. Sometimes it becomes a hook. Sometimes I play the draw and push it left without any draw at all.

Hi all,

102 mph is what I consider to be great clubhead speed with your 3 wood.

You are getting some solid speed....maybe it's a shaft fit issue????

Hi all,

The problem you got in my opinion is making proper contact.

if you can reach 102 MPH of club head speed with a 3 wood you should hit 105+ easy with a driver. If that is the case you should be hitting the driver more than 255. Probably more like 270. If you can hit the driver 270, you should be able to hit your irons quite a bit further. Basically, contact is key. I can swing 110+ plus I'm better off swinging 100 and making great contact.

Those numbers seem goofy to me.

If that is accurate with you 3W, you would carry that close to 250 with good launch conditions. That would put your Driver at 270. With a good bounce you would hit alot of drives around 300.

I carry my driver about 250. I hit my PW 125. 8I 150. My driver swing speed is right at 100.

The numbers are reasonable. I am not sure about the head speed. If you are doing these all the time, you definitely can play well.

Like you said, work on consistency and you should be good.

I can see my short game is improving, as I have fewer putts per hole. I attribute this to getting up and down more often due to better chipping. I hink my fairway stats are misleading, because I'm actually driving the ball better this year. I've had a lot of good drives in the rough leaving short wedges.

Switching to new irons has hurt my driving accuracy and my GIR. I used to hit 4i off the tee and find the fairway 80% of the time. Now, my accuracy with iron off the tee is almost the same as withdriver. Its getting better though.

Seems i better check the way i contact the ball. Would be great if with my current clubhead speed i hit longer with my irons.

Thank you all for your help.

    • Day 601 - 2026-05-25 Short-ish day with only some later Skillest lessons, so I stayed after and got some swings in. GEARS Hybrid was set up for a lefty, so… not that. 🙂
    • Day 21, May 25.  Hit "the whole bucket" as practice today after reviewing my Skillest lesson.  I think something crept into my swing last week that wasn't in the lesson, so I went back to the lesson and renewed my focus.  Each ball was a minute or so, 2-3 slow rehearsal backswings and checking the mirror for how far back I was going. "The whole bucket" means every ball I have in the bin at my indoor practice room;  I counted when I put them back, that's six dozen plus six total.  That is probably more full swings than I took over the weekend (excluding range warm-ups) in two rounds!  But these were all with a 6-iron.
    • Day 265 5-25 Hit some balls just to see where i was, no "thoughts' except getting arms in front. Did some recording where i focused on getting chest through and arms in front.
    • Day 76 (25 May 26) - Broke out the "vintage" clubs (MacGregor blades, Wilson 4150 laminates) to work with clubs that are much less forgiving.  Worked through the bag using hard foam balls for the full swings, regular balls for the chips and pitches.  Found it to be a more focused session on making consistent contact.
    • Can you elaborate on this?  There's a par-4 hole at the course I've played the most (was my home course for over a decade, now 50 miles away but I still go and play there) whose green is below the fairway and I realized recently it's one of three holes on the course I've never made birdie, despite that I often have a short iron into the green for my second shot.  It isn't even that I haven't made birdie, but I realize I often don't hit the green.  My typical play of the hole is to have a near-GIR and sometimes I get up and down, but not as often as I would if I were trying to 2-putt.
