Things I saw when I attended The Memorial this past week:
  1. I saw a player reach a par 5 in two only to walk away with a 7 after five -putting.
  2. I saw a consistent player leave a ball in a fairway bunker.
  3. I saw a winner on the PGA Tour this year miss a six inch putt .
  4. I saw eight balls go in various water hazards.
  5. I saw a slice 30 yards right of the fairway, immediately followed by another slice 30 yards wide of the fairway, but left.
  6. I saw an Aussie choke away a chance at winning by whiffing and blocking his way to the lamest two-putts.
  7. I saw three guys playing for $10,000 skins.
  8. I saw the equipment some players have under their manufacturer's headcovers, and I saw some of those manufacturers try like heck to find a driver that their player could use that wasn't a competitors on the range later that afternoon.
  9. I saw prototypes of different irons and woods.
  10. I saw four people mistake Kevin Hall for Tiger Woods.
  11. I saw several people get an autograph from someone and immediately turn around and ask someone else "who was that?"
  12. I saw Jack Nicklaus picking his nose.

That's all I can think of off-hand... though if I think of something else, I'll write it later in a separate post.

*shakes head*

Unbelievable. That was a crazy list Erik. It just goes to show you what kind of stuff happens on a week-to-week basis when the cameras aren't necessarily on the golfers.

Explain #8 to me if you can. If you are head of player development at Calloway, why would you sponsor me if I prefer Ping? For that matter, if I'm good enough to command the attention of Calloway, why aren't the Ping people throwing some chips my way? It would appear people are ending up at the prom with the wrong dates.

As for #7, who? who? who? And how come the PGA doesn't squelch side betting like this? They're so picky about their image, I would think they would be all over this.

Players aren't required to play EVERY club from a manufacturer.

Because players don't normally make it obvious. It's a widely un-enforced rule.

    • Hello Golfing Buddies, It has been awhile since I posted but I am the Retired Old Man that asked for advice because I suffered two "T.I.A.'s about switching from playing right handed to playing left handed.  I purchased a Callaway Edge Left handed golf clubs. I changed the grips to oversize grips.  Well, two weeks ago and still at 79 years old, I shot a 44 and 47 on a small course in my hometown.  I am currently changing my shafts from regular flex to Senior flex.  So, you can see' it can be done! So, you other old timers; get with the program! Blessings to all of you. Retired Old Man (Terry Warner)

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
