practice short range balls

Does anyone routinely practice with soft short-range balls in the backyard or anything? I bought a few yellow foam balls from Walmart and they seem pretty good. Have practiced only irons with them but they seem clearly show what is going on with the ball spin wise. Especially slicing, etc. Seems like it would be a decent tool to narrow down my swing mechanics. I can clearly tell if I hit it too high, or too low, or just slice badly based on the ball flight.

I was looking into such practice tools and ran across birdieballs, however there is very little talk about them on here. Would that be a significantly better thing for backyard practice?

I also cant wait to try them out with the driver, because that is where I am really inconsistent.

i use them thier ok i dont have enough room cept for 6 iron down in my yard i like usin them in the house for short game

I have some of them as well. They work pretty good but I would be careful using them with your driver, if they are ones like I have used then the driver could break them or at least make a big dent in them. lol

I have also used the BirdieBalls and they are pretty cool. They go a little farther than the plastic golf balls but are definitely something to look into. I prefer them actually, as long as I can hit them off of a mat or something.

I heard those are nice. Like 50% of normal distance. If correct in this, that would be great for wedge practice.

thier called almost golf and on the box it says a third the distance of normal balls and thy will draw and cut thier kinda fun

I have used those plastic whiffle ball looking balls (white, holes in them, buy'em at Walmart for $3/doz) a number of times. You can kind of tell what is going on, although good ball contact is hard to determine.

The good news/bad news here is that I (apparently) make the same swing errors hitting those balls as regular golf balls.

The white, solid plastic one (also typically available at Walmart) better mimic a golf shot, but they go too far for my back yard (maybe 150 feet). As a kid we had a 3 hole "plastic ball course" that we used to play.

If you are going to buy a net why not just hit real balls?

      Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.

      I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
