When I go to the range I bring a rubber tee that is cut down so it extends about 1/2" above the mat.  When I practice I place the ball about 1 1/2" - 2" behind the shortened tee.  If I swing with proper lag and weight transfer that would result in taking a divot in front of the ball I can hear the club strike the tee after the ball.
