there's a short par 5 at this course that i rarely play and to the right of the fairway is a cliff. they keep the rough really high to help keep balls from going over the edge, but it is hard to get out of there. i was about 180 to the green and decided to hit a 7 iron, more loft than i normally would, just trying to get it up somewhere near the green. well, i pulled/hooked it out the tall grass and ended up in the trees on the other side of the fairway. i had an opening to the green with my third shot but i wonder what i need to do from there. the best approach is probably going to a more lofted club, maybe a 9 or pw to just get out and into the fairway, not even worry about getting up near the green. do you think it would be possible to hit a 7 wood out of there, since it is heavier than the iron? that's some of the deepest rough i've seen so i dunno.

was that a real dog?

The longest club I will hit out of that sort of stuff would be a 7 iron. I just don't have the speed to hit anything longer.

A wood is no good from the deep stuff. You need not only a lot of club head speed, but also a club that will cut through the rough better. A SW will be your easiest to get out with , but you need/wanted some distance on it, so a 7 iron was probably fine, you just didn't execute it. Come in the ball at a steeper angle to minimize the amount of grass you have to go through.

If you're in that deep, just wedge it back into play. More strokes are lost by players trying to do too much from an impossible situation than from any other reason.

    • Day 27 (7 Dec 25) - Got in a few swings with 9i and hard foam balls in backyard.  Setup weight fwd (rebuilt left foot really lets me feel the weight in a slightly painful way) - kept the backswing to around 9 o’clock focusing on contact and resulting divot pattern.  Like how the hard foam balls come off the face (almost like real balls in sound).  A good abbreviated session as I only able to hit about a dozen balls in the fading light.
    • Day 117 12-7 A bit of chipping practice today. Full swing- hit some real balls to see where Im at.
    • Not the part I was replying to: Handicaps did not go down much (like 0.14 on average IIRC?) when we went from 10/20*0.96 to 8/20. And a good chunk of that was from the +s.
    • I think he meant in the UK. The old system was completely different from the new one. 10/20 x 0.96 vs 8/20 would really only impact very low handicaps I think. The 0.96 serves to increase differentials for plus differentials, where 8/20 vs 10/20 works to lower differentials for all. I don't know many plus golfers who would be upset that their index got lower. A lot of really good players don't even really keep their handicaps up-to-date. They're much more interested in their WAGR rankings which get them entries to certain events.
    • Day 433 - 2025-12-07 Got some work in after Junior Elite before a night of sports (and the return of my wife!). Backswing work. Similar to what a lot of my juniors are doing.
