I am thinking of buying: http://www.lostgolfballs.com/Titleis.../category_id/8

The AA version. But first I want to know what the standard condition of the balls are, and how accurate the picture is to the ball.

They're the biggest if not the best recycled golf balls vendor in the US. Try the AAA first if you have not bought before. I think you'll be happy with their AAA grading system. There's a big step down when you go with the AA.

I bought 100 Nike balls from them last fall, mint condition, for $40 shipped. Great people to deal with, YMMV.

When I last needed to purchase golf balls, and wanted to try many, I picked up about 8 dozen of the AAA version of different types for a total of $75 or so. I was very happy. I need to buy more before too long, waiting for them to have a free-shipping offer on something. But I am going to go back to them!

I would definitely go with AAA quality. AA really isn't something you'd wanna take to the course, but AAA is really impressive. I just bought 10 dozen Pro V1's from them earlier today, and I've never had a problem playing anything other than AA quality.

So does anybody use 4A or 5A? 4A seems to be not a whole lot more than 3A, but 5A is way expensive (but still below retail).

Are these stamped with the A-AAAAA rating system? If they are, can they still be gamed at tourneys (where people care about that kind of thing).

Really cheap ones! They will literally evaporate if there is any water or deep brush anywhere. I didn't start searching for "better" golf balls until I started averaging about 1 lost per round...Which actually means I stopped finding B330s, ProV1s, and Tour i's in the woods while I was searching for my ball because I stopped losing mine.

When I started I used the Maxfli Noodles which weren't bargain basement, but they were 2 dozen for $15 at Sam's Club. And actually, that's actually a ball that I would still tee up.

When I started, I picked up a ton of cheap Top-Flite Strata on ebay. They don't feel that bad off of cast clubs - no worse than range balls. And I think I paid something like 33 cents each, including shipping. By the time I was ready to move on up to "better" balls, I had over three dozen left over. I gave them to friends who needed them.

Literally, the cheapest good-condition ball you can find. If you are just starting, it will be months, years before it will make any difference.
