I've played this, except we run the course and your score is a mix between how many shots you take and your run time. I took driver (choke up if you have to), 6 iron (maybe 5i), 56*, and putter. It was a good time.

How exactly do you score this? Do you play 18 or just 9 and what is considered a good time? I guess the course would have to be wide open or you would have to be the first groups out. Some of the golfers I have seen would probably die if they did this.

Off the top of my head I would take a 3i (I use this about half the time off the tee anyway) a 7i a 60* and putter.

Sounds fun I'd love to try a tourney like this.

I'd go driver, 7 iron, 54 (I'm getting one soon), putter.

I've never tried this but it sounds like fun.

I'd take:

3 utility wood (15*)
7 iron
50* GW
putter

Conveniently these are the clubs I'm probably the most confident with.

Yeah, there are very select few times that it can be done. If I remember right we did minutes + strokes as the final score. There may have been a factor or fraction in there somewhere, but I don't remember. A good time is about an hour for 18 holes. We called it battle golf, but we definitely still respected the grounds and rules.

I would probably take my driver, 7 iron, 52* and my putter -

I would probably be better served to take my 3H instead of my driver, but on my best scoring days it all stems from a hot streak with my driver, so it would be hard to give up that potential.

5 wood
6 iron
9 iron
GW

I'd putt with my 5 wood.

I figure I could score pretty damn well (all things considered) with that combo right there.

It would depend greatly on the length of the course...but if we're saying that no par 4s get over about 450...then I'm fine.

5 wood

The last time I played in a tournament like this I did putt with my 5W and I after a little bit of practice, I found that I could putt almost as good with that as I could with my putter. Don't get me wrong, I love my putter, but it this type of competition, I've never seen it won by someone who limited his shot options by carrying a putter unless he was playing a very short course.

Since I no longer carry a 5W, I'd use either my 3W, 4W or hybrid for putting, depending on what I chose to carry that day. The hybrid is easier to putt with because it has a shorter shaft, but all would work ok.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Between the first and second half of our league we have a "Two Club And A Putter" day. We had to change the name from the "3 club day" just so people wouldn't putt with their other clubs.

It's amazing how creative you can get when limited to just 2 clubs. Choke downs, punch shots & grounders are all in play. The most surprising thing is that most guys shoot within 3-4 shots of their normal (9 hole) scores. The league plays just for skins that day, no standings or matches are at risk. All of the 18 hole side bets remain intact. Last year I used a 7 wood and a 9 iron. I found out I can hit either club 160 yards when I have to! The guy shot the best score used a driver and a wedge. I love the game, it forces you to use your head and create shots.

We did the same thing in our league, I went with a 5 wood, 8 iron, GW. Regreded not having a putter, it cost me 5 to 9 stokes.

3 wood, 7 iron, SW, Putter.

A quote from Kris
...is that college bball really isn't "lower tier". The better teams have their rosters filled with guys who could play in the NBA. hell, guys used to come straight from high school to the NBA. I really don't think there's much of a difference skill-wise between the two.

I used to organize a 3 club tournament every year, most players brought a fairway wood, a mid iron and putter. I think bringing a putter is the mistake most people make. Just a few minutes of practice and you can get pretty good at putting with a wedge, and having a wedge in a 3 club tourney is a huge advantage. I would select my SW, and 7 iron and a 3 iron. They are all 4 clubs apart in the bag and I can cover all distances from 230 to 0 with those clubs.

In a 4 club tournament you have an even greater advantage. I would still use the wedge in place of a putter, but this time I would probably go SW, 8 iron, 5 iron and 2 iron.

  • 3 weeks later...

I think it would depend on the course but I think 3-wood, 6-iron, PW and putter. I recall once playing a 9-hole "two-club" (putter mandatory) competition and I used 7-iron. Winner shot -3, I shot a respectable +2. Maybe more clubs just confuses us more??

    • Day 48. Got out at lunch to the range to hit some driver shots. Haven’t had much practice there. Focused on setup suggested by @iacas and found some very playable results. I did try to hit a couple of bunker shots after that with much less success 🙃
    • Got a rare birdie on #18 Par 5.  Drive was good and left me in range of the green.  I was @ 210 from the center and needed @ 180 to clear a hazard area.  Green had bunkers lest, right and on back. had been struggling and most shots were short so I took the 225 club figuring back of green hit well. i did hit it well, @ 229 per SS and dead on—kind at the pin.  Ended up @ 1 foot off the back in short rough and lucky for me it was a back pin placement.  Chipped about 15 feet leaving a 3 feet putt for par which I sunk.
    • Yea, so to clarify for me. I do not feel the clubface much in the swing. I feel the weight of the club. I can feel if I hit the club off the heel or toe. When I try to feel if the clubface is open or closed in the swing, I feel it more with my hands, and less of the clubhead. I would classify majority of my swings as not feeling like the clubface does much of all. It feels like I hold the clubface open. In the finish, it doesn't feel like my left hand faces the ground. It feels more like it faces the sky. I will try to be more aware of this, but it was just the sensation I got when I was making what felt like good swings. For the most part, I was hitting slight draws or slight pushes.  On this golf trip, I had to hit a low 8 iron around a tree to the green. I made an alignment adjustment, and actively try to roll my hands a bit more to get it to sling around the corner. I do have a habit of not adjusting how the clubface comes through impact, and I can still hit the ball straight-ish even moving the ball way back in my stance and trying to swing out more.  Yea, my feels are more hands and arms, less actually feeling the clubface.
