Cheater!!!!!!

Most of my friends "help" themselves along during a round but they also don't play very often. When I saw one of my friends kicking his ball into a better lie and out from behind a tree I just laughed and made fun of him. Of my friends who play regularly, they play MOSTLY legit. They do cheat sometimes but I don't mind because we are good friends and don't brag unless it's in a joking manner. I am really out there competing with myself and I don't cheat because I know I am only cheating myself. One of my friends has recently incorporated this attitude and it has added some strokes to his play but he gets much more fullfillment out of the round.

When your "friend" brags about beating you just mention, in a semi-joking manner, that things might be different if he were to play by the rules. From there he can't lie without you pointing out the obvious. Just don't be too rude about it, it's not worth it to quarrel with people.

I've played golf with a guy two times in the last two weeks and all of last summer. He's in my general group of friends, but I am not a fan of him because he CHEATS. Today we played 9 holes and he claimed to shoot a 39, but he plAyed multiple balls, didn't count OB shots and shaved strokes. My buddies and I agree this is getting old. He also brags all the time about how great his drives are and how amazing he is. Should we quit playing with this moron or confront him??? What would you say to him?

People like this ruin a good round of golf. He is only lying to himself with those shaved strokes. Ditch the ******* and find an honest dude to golf with.

I sometimes foot wedge the ball, depending on who I playing with and whether or not they care. I really only do it when the lie will cause me to damage a club in the process of playing the shot. All my regular golf partners agree and do not enforce a penalty if the ball is only moved a short lateral distance ie: a club length.

Didn't know what a "footwedge" was. But it seems to defeat the whole idea of golf and playing it where it lies.

I believe you are allowed a club length from a man made obstacle in most games. I don't care what the rule is, if the shot is through trees and dangerous or will cause damage to my club, there is no way in hell i am "playing it as it lies". give me the penalty!

Everyone has stated ideas to trick this guy, or what an ass he is etc, but amazingly I haven't seen anyone say just talk to him like a normal person. This is how small problems escalate to a silly level that never needed to happen.

Maybe he doesn't realise what he is doing is wrong, maybe he doesn't think it is a problem. Why not just have a normal conversation with him and discuss this.

If he still carries on cheating, just decide if its really a problem, and if it is a problem, is it still worth playing with this guy? Only you can answer that not anyone else.

I have never had a problem with how people keep score. I really don't care what they do...unless we are playing for money, which I rarely do anyway except with my friends that I know play by the rules. Anytime I play with strangers or for anything unimportant I don't even ask. If they want to keep score they can do it on their own.

I agree with most of the comments already made. Tell him you'll play a money game straight up, by the rules and kick his butt. Then anytime he doesn't keep accurate score in the future you can bring it up what happens when he plays by the rules.

The other option is to keep track of his score and confront him after the round if the two don't match up. Not in confrontational way, just in a way so he know you are on to him. He he comes in and says he shot 39 just ask him what he had on 5 when he went OB and didn't count the stroke-and-distance.

If he's no fun to play with, stop. Who cares what he tells everyone else?

My 3 favorite people to play with don't count OB, don't take hazard penalties or take mulligans and gimme's from 5' etc.. They're not trying to make a living out of golf (neither am I btw) so if that's how they have fun then no worries. We play for chump change sometimes and a few times I've lost where they haven't counted strokes. No biggie to me because it puts pressure on me to play better and beat them even with their "help". Golf's about having fun for me and if giving my buddies a mulligan makes it more fun I don't care..

Guess you have to ask yourself. If you're not having fun why are you still playing with the dude?
