John Atkinson, the Nebraska man whose inspirational story was the basis for his inclusion in the first Golf Digest U.S. Open Challenge, died Thursday after a battle with lung cancer. He was 40.

Nearly one year to the day after he played at Torrey Pines.

Saw the piece the Today show did yesterday morning. Matt Lauer seemed to be genuinely inspired by him. Hopes & prayers to his family.

Really sad to hear. I'm glad he got to play last year. My wife is a cancer survivor and it helps you realize how fragile life is (thank God she has been cancer free for over a year)
