I am right now. I changed my grip a month ago, and am now currently trying to change my plane and some other things. I have always just swung the club before and I am terribly laid off at the top, come in from way way to far on the inside, dip down, don't straighten my left leg on the downswing, and thats about it. All of these things cause me inconsistancy, but I still manage to play pretty well, just not to my potential. Getting my club to not be laid off is the most challenging thing for me. So when I get all these things fixed or even just closer to how they should be, I'll be hitting it longer and straighter.

My swing is constantly evolving (improving I hope) as I apply tweaks here and there, but I have never gone through a complete overhaul. I am overhauling my mental game though.

Wow, all that in a matter of a day? I've completely overhauled my swing, but not in a day. I've played this game long enough to know that nothing happens over night. I made the decision a couple years ago to start working on changing my swing. I used to have a very long swing with a breakdown of the wrists at the top a la John Daly. I was very inconsistent depending on my timing for that particular day. I could be very good or I could be very bad. I basically changed everything about my swing over the course of two years with the biggest change being how far I take the club back (I still fight it today some). I try to feel like I'm taking a half swing on every club and my feeling of a half swing is actually a full swing. Swing plane, ball position, grip, everything changed. As a result, if me the golfer from two years ago played the golfer of today, today's golfer would hand the other his lunch. I did lose some distance, but only about one club which to me isn't a big deal. I still hit it plenty far enough but generally much more accurate as a result of the tighter, shorter swing.

I'm going through some changes, but I wouldn't call it a complete change. Ive had a habit of bringing the club back on the inside and then coming over the top on the downswing. Ive started taking lessons to hopfully improve on this and right now all Ive changed is my take away and trying to keep my downswing path on the inside. Thats about all I can handle at this time.

Bull, if you made a couple of those changes you would have shot at least in the hundreds...

Well thats me anyway. I had one alignment change when I started that took my score from about ~90 to 110ish and this lasted for months. Then a grip/plane change that caused a mid 80's to 105 sort of thing for longer then I want to remember.

And I play/practice 4 days a week so IMO it takes a really long time to change because you really have to force it for a long time and you lose the ability to even play decent golf.

Thats the fun thing about golf though, everytime my scores get consistent I pick another swing flaw and iron it out over a few months. Scores go way up and then come back down by a few strokes.

Just a grip change if you are on one extreme with at least one other compensation can kill your ability to hit a golf ball, I remember hovering over my ball with a four iron while playing knowing that I simply had no idea where the ball was going just because my grip went from extremely strong and stance aligned right to nuetral and stance aligned right. I had to hit 1000's of bad shots before other things started to fix themselves.

So its pretty nuts you got away with four swing thoughts at once that were contrary to your natural swing and shot low eighties.

My golf buddie's always offer to pay for my golf lessons because they make much more from the side bets with me. I was shooting 72-78 and after my two lesson's I have shot 78-82. Hopefully in the long run it will be worth it .

I have switch from a baseball grip to a interlock grip. That was hard for me, it took time getting use to, but now i'm glad I did, I have much more directionnal control now.

    • Day 37: did my drill swings in the garage with foam balls for about 15 minutes. Working on getting my backswing more turned and then going from there.
    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
    • Day 12 - 2025-12-31 Limited time today, and heavy rains here. 5-10 minutes of mirror work for full swing, working on trail side.
