it takes off at my target on the proper trajectory, but after about 200 or so yards it duck hooks to the left, and sometimes before 200, depending on how much extension i get after my shot.

Well then that means your swing path is likely correct or else the ball wouldn't take off toward your target. If the balls takes off initially where you intend it too and then hooks, your clubface is closed at impact. Maybe you have a really strong grip (the way your hands are rotated on the grip, not how tight you're holding it)?

interesting.... you could have a point there. i know my grip pressure is not too tight, cause i've already checked that out. do you know any way i could check to see if that's the case?

It is the club that has the fan on the end that is usually used to create lag and help with distance:

Awesome, thanks for the link! I've never seen one of those. Looks like a pretty good training aid. Have you ever used one?

Yes I have used one while working with my instructor. He is actually the one that told me it would be a good aid. Now this is just my opinion so others may vary but I think this is a very good training aid. As a matter of fact, I am going to order one this week. It gives you the perfect feel of what lag is. As I said earlier, it really makes you use your hips to get the club moving as well. I can see it helping my hip movement as well as my distance. I would suggest trying to find one to swing to see if it is something that "you" will like, so don't order one just taking my word for it.

Keep in mind that anything I say could potentially screw you up even worse since I can't see your swing, but hopefully it helps. The other thing that comes to mind is maybe your grip pressure is too loose? If it's too loose, this will allow you to release your hands more quickly which could be closing the clubface too early. You may even try taking a slightly tighter grip pressure (just don't strangle it). Here are some videos on YouTube on the grip. Hopefully they will explain things better than I can type them here. The rule of thumb is that if your ball starts at your target your swing path is usually OK. If your ball starts off left of your target, your swinging outside-in. If your ball starts right of your target, you're swinging inside-out. From there, whatever happens to the ball while it's in the air should tell you what your clubface was like at impact. So if your ball starts off right of your target and then hooks, you know you hit the ball with an inside-out swing with a closed clubface. If it were to start off right of your target and fade, you had an inside-out swing with an open clubface at impact. The same rules can be used if it starts off left of your target or straight at it. I'm referring to a right handed player here. Also, you say it goes out about 200 yards and then hooks. Typically a hook is quicker than that. Usually it will take off and hook fairly quickly. When your ball hooks, how far would you say it's hooking? Are we talking about a ball that falls to the left 10 yards? 20 yards or more? If it's simply going at your target and then falling off to the left 5-10 yards as it comes down , that's called a "draw" and is usually a preferred ball flight by a lot of people over a fade or slice. If your ball is just "drawing," there's nothing wrong with that at all and I would simply aim 10 yards right of your target and allow for it. Really just depends on how far your ball is actually hooking once it's out there. Hope that helps.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'll definitely look for one next time I'm out. I appreciate the info.

thanks for the videos... the second one helped quite a bit. now i've got something to work with. i usually have a small 10-15 yard draw when i'm hitting it properly. lately i've been duck hooking it, at least 30 yards or more. as far as the ball flight, when i hit it it's always wanting to go left, but once it hits the apex, it starts ducking like crazy. but like you say, it often doesn't make it 200 yards, that's best case scenario. sometimes it goes quite a bit shorter and into the woods. in which case i put away my driver and hit my 3 wood or hybrid.

You're welcome.

10-15 yard draw for me is what I prefer. That's my typical shot shape as well but lately I've been fading all irons but hooking my driver, so go figure. Its been one of those years thus far. Everyone is different as I'm sure you know, but I know for myself, when a duck or snap hook rears its ugly head, it's because I got to quick from the top and tried to really go after one. I've had a few pros tell me that "quick hooks are the result of a quick swing." I usually do much better when I'm not trying to hit the ball 380 yards (kidding). lol. You feel like you're swinging slower but in reality you're probably only swinging a couple mph slower which maybe will give you a couple yards less carry (or you may even gain a few yards simply from better contact as a result of feeling like your swinging slower). Good luck.

keep your feet together and swing your driver or any club then try to hit the ball with your feet together.

swing the club with the shaft behind your back and look in a mirror to see the back and hip turn on your backswing.

    • Day 56 - 2024-11-15 Light day. Lots of catch-up work. Checked the grip to make sure I wasn't compensating there, and did a little backswing work.
    • Day 197 (15 Nov 24) - Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management.  Solid round of 83 (41/42) - 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.
    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.
