I can't seem to find a groove in my swing. Sometimes I'll swing perfect and through the ball, the ball flight is straight, my head comes up with my shoulder and everything is good. The problem is I can be doing the same thing 3-4 times then on the 5th time I just cut the top of the ball, or dig too deep into the grass/mat whatever I am swinging on. I can't seem to keep a consistent stroke the whole time. I been to lessons and while the instructor is with me he corrects alot of things but when I leave the lesson I just seem to occasionally hit consistently. I have had my irons adjusted with the proper lie, grip size and length (+ 1/2 in) for my arm length etc. I am kind of lost as what to do. I feel like I am ball watching too much, without even the club hitting the ball I am already looking forward to see where it goes. I know you aren't supposed to ball watch but you don't want to keep your head down all the time either, you don't get the lift follow through. Any help to fix this problem would be great thanks.

Edit: I also feel like my grip is an issue, I have seen people grip the club with their left thumb in line with the words down the grip, or 12 o clock. My instructor told me to grip it around 1 o clock and this kind of twists my hand over. Is this the right thing to do?

here's a drill. get your pitching wedge, and swing it back and forth evenly back and forth, brushing the ground at the bottom of your swing, making sure it's square as you brush the ground. do this about twenty times then hit about three balls. after you've done it with each club, you should have a feel where the bottom of your swing is and place the ball accordingly. it is at that point you should release your club. the club should stay behind your hands until you reach this point, and when you release it should feel like you're going to fling the club down the fairway. this way you'll know if your grip is too tight or loose. if you're hooking it's too tight, if you're slicing it's too loose. as far as grip goes, i keep my left thumb straight and my right thumb at about 10:30, but that's neither here nor there. don't get too hung up on what your thumbs are doing.

Thanks. I was hitting earlier today and I realized I been hitting the top of the ball alot lately, and rarely i dig under the ball. What do you think this problem could be contributed to.

I tried putting the ball a little closer to me and dropping my arms a little more so its vertical with the ground and i got some great results, took about 20 hits and only 4-5 of them were thined. I feel like with the ball closer and the club closer to my body I get the club into the mat more and thus digging into the ball before hitting the ball

    • Day 27 (7 Dec 25) - Got in a few swings with 9i and hard foam balls in backyard.  Setup weight fwd (rebuilt left foot really lets me feel the weight in a slightly painful way) - kept the backswing to around 9 o’clock focusing on contact and resulting divot pattern.  Like how the hard foam balls come off the face (almost like real balls in sound).  A good abbreviated session as I only able to hit about a dozen balls in the fading light.
    • Day 117 12-7 A bit of chipping practice today. Full swing- hit some real balls to see where Im at.
    • Not the part I was replying to: Handicaps did not go down much (like 0.14 on average IIRC?) when we went from 10/20*0.96 to 8/20. And a good chunk of that was from the +s.
    • I think he meant in the UK. The old system was completely different from the new one. 10/20 x 0.96 vs 8/20 would really only impact very low handicaps I think. The 0.96 serves to increase differentials for plus differentials, where 8/20 vs 10/20 works to lower differentials for all. I don't know many plus golfers who would be upset that their index got lower. A lot of really good players don't even really keep their handicaps up-to-date. They're much more interested in their WAGR rankings which get them entries to certain events.
    • Day 433 - 2025-12-07 Got some work in after Junior Elite before a night of sports (and the return of my wife!). Backswing work. Similar to what a lot of my juniors are doing.
