I found a coupon from a local course that gives you a 1hr lesson with video analysis and software to take home, all for free for a first time student!

So my question is, what should I expect to take away from the lesson? I've been working on the "basic" mechanics of my swing with my neighbor (who's golfed for 20+) and it seems to be getting better.

I expect him to look at my swing, tell me what I am doing wrong and tell me what i can do to fix it. Is it that simple?

Any advice before I actually take the lesson? I don't have golf shoes yet, is that going to matter for the lesson?

Thanks guys.

I would guess you should expect some pointers and a strong sales pitch to purchase a series of lessons

everyone I've known who has gone to a free lesson has experienced more of a sales pitch than anything - not that it is a bad thing - usually one lesson won't be quite enough for someone learning the basics like you and I. Use the time to really get a feel for the guys personality and whether is meshes well with yours. As long as he is halfway knowledgeable, that is the most important thing. Also, don't buy anymore than a series of 4-5 lessons, or if you get more, makes sure they can be spaced out well. The breakthroughs you will get won't generally come during the actual lesson, but during your own practice time while you work on what you learned. I bunched up 5 lessons in 3 weeks and it was just too much too quickly. and get some golf shoes

workin on the shoes thing atm. I know I'm not getting more lessons from this place, they charge nearly 100/hr. Granted you get all their fancy technology, but that's a ton of $$. There's a deal through our local community college for a 1hr/week, 5 week long course that only costs 100 total and it's at the best private club in the area.

The main thing you should be asking yourself is if you gel with the instructor(s) at this place. $100 per hour does not sound expensive since I pay $50 for a 30 min. session. I can get 3 for $130, but I am going lesson by lesson for now. Check to see if they do 30 min lessons. I think I would loose focus if I listened to someone for 60 min. straight.

alright, was a great lesson. I only hit my 6 iron really. He took video of my swing, broke down what I was doing right and wrong, told me how to fix it, then we went back and hit some more shots for about 10min. The computer part took about 40min, but apparently that's common for first time lessons. What he told me really helped. I think if I decided to get lessons there (it's awfully expensive compared to other places around here) that I'd go through him. It was like having your grandpa teach you golf.

Good to hear your first lesson went well. I'm starting back lessons in about 9 hours from now, lol.

I took 6-7 lessons about 2-3 years ago. Gonna give it another go with a new instructor.

BTW, you can haggle with them a bit if you commit to some more lessons. Worth a shot.

If you look at my second post, there's an awesome deal through my local CC for group lessons. Wouldn't hurt to see if something in your area does the same.
