I was planning on regripping, but first I wanted to tap the collective wisdom of this board and get answers to a couple of questions I had.

First, is it possible to put .58 grips on .60 shafts? I'm pretty certain that my irons are .58, but not so sure about the other clubs. From what I read, it seems somewhat routine, but I just wanted to make sure.

Second, how fearful should I be of regripping clubs with graphite shafts? My main concerns are scratching or overtightning (and cracking) the shaft when I have it in the vise (I bought the rubber thing).

Thanks.

The .580 on a .600 shaft will produce a slightly midsize grip. Just snug the shafts in the vise until they don't move and you'll be fine.

If you have an air compressor, that makes the job go real quick and clean. Google it for videos on how to.

I think an M58 grip on a .60" butt is generally considered standard.
You can find a chart here with several of other size combos.

Tried googling for the air method but was unsuccessful. Is this for installing the new one? Do you even need new tape or can you get it on over the old tape?

Really easy... use a LOT of grip solvent and it should slip on real easy. It just takes some getting used to. The first time I did it, I didn't use enough solvent and it took a really long time, but now I can re-grip a .58 in about 2 minutes. Graphite shafts shouldn't be too different, just be careful with the blade.

Here's the video. There is no need to buy this "kit". All you need is the rubber coned tip on the air gun that comes with your compressor. You will also need a safety hose so the old grip doesn't over inflate when removing it. I use a piece of hose from the pool. 6 foot sections are about $4 at any pool store.

I also dip about 3 inches of the open end of the new grip in soapy water to facilitate & give it enough lubrication to slip on easily. To adjust the grip after installation, just give it a puff and a twist. It's almost too easy.

If you don't happen to have solvent, using soapy water on the double-sided tape and the inside of the grip works wonders. Also beware of the rib if you have them in your new grips. You'll have to line it up perfectly or it will feel very strange. I love the Golf Pride Tour Velvet's because they're easy to install and feel great.

So the pool hose, or in this case the safety sleeve, is just to protect you in case you over inflate the grip and make it explode? Seems to me you could do this without that sleeve at all.

What about if you are using multi-compound type grips, no need to worry about stretching them out at all?

The only restriction that I'm aware of, is that it's not a good idea to do Winn grips like this.

You can do a full set of clubs in less than half of the time it takes doing it the old fashioned way.

As far as the tape goes, I removed the old 2 sided tape, and then put on regular 2" single sided tape. There is absolutely no shifting of the grip, and the sizing is constant. I now believe that the 2 sided tape is just a slippery surface to slide the grips over when drenched with solvent.

I should also add that you'll want a compressor with a tank on it. You'll be using a lot of air. Also, the air sprayers with the trigger.

Thanks for the info. I think this looks easy enough, I am thinking about the Golfpride Decade Multi-Compound, I think those should work just fine.

Yes. It's a safety thing. You have to be careful especially with grips that have been on there awhile. They will inflate quickly and pop, er, I mean, POP . Once an old grip cracks or breaks you will need to remove it the old fashioned way. You could use just about anything tubular for the safety sleeve. One of those tubes they used to use to divide golf bags would be perfect. Whatever you use for a sleeve, use. The beauty of this method is that you can practice again and again with the same grip. Once you get the rhythm down, it will take you longer to affix the club in the vice than it will take you to do the regripping.

Do people use larger diameter grips when they layer tape under the grip? Ive found that I have a hell of a time installing a grip unless i tear off the old tape and only use one layer of new tape, no matter how much solvent I use.

Get some carpet blades for your utility knife -they are hooked shaped and make it almost impossible to screw up your shaft. I've found them easier for steel shafts, anyway, as well.

I've never done grips with a vise, mostly because I don't have one. I've never had any issues.

Definately try the air pressure method. It's so simple, once you've tried it you won't even consider doing it another way.

A little tip when it comes to regripping: Put a mark on the shaft of where the center of the grip must be placed. Mark it before you pull off the old grip and putting on a new one should be even more simple. It's not too easy to align the grip with the club if you have to aim down the shaft. A simple mark with a pen is all you need.

I am not sure what most of this means. I was planning to buy a set of 13 .600 Grips, and re-grip every club I play with. Is that going to work? Where can I find what size my current shafts are? I am assuming that a .60 Grip will fit on most any club, but might need a little extra tape to remain tight on a .58 shaft?

Another tip for the air method, when placing the new grip on, take a needle an put four holes along the grip. This will help keep the grip from over inflating during installation. They're tiny holes you'll never see.
