So I currently only have a PW and LW and really want to get a SW and Gap Wedge to help cut down the distance differences I have. My question is, as my handicap shows, I'm a player that is still feeling out my swing and wonder am I really going to see a difference between the entry level wedges and say a Vokey or Callaway wedge? Being a better wedge, is it better because the user is better or does the wedge help that quite a bit? Thanks for the help! :)

First off, you probably shouldn't have a lob wedge at all, it's not something that is useful to most high handicappers. In terms of differences between cheaper wedged and Vokey/Callaway wedges, that is a matter of taste more than a matter of skill/experience. With wedges, it's all about feel and control. The one advantage you will get out of the more expensive wedges is more spin due to "enhanced" grooves and/or milled faces. That advantage is about to be reduced with the new USGA rules about grooves. If I were you, I would concentrate on finding the right feel and loft for your short game without thinking about brand or price.

Definitely get a SW. The GW is one of the most fun clubs to hit.

I used to play a beginner golf set, and slowly started switching over until I had the set I wanted. One of the last things I worked on was wedges... wow I wish I had switched over sooner, vokey wedges has improved my short game amazingly. I get much better feedback off the club than the less expensive ones I had before

A cheap route is Adams Tom Watson PVD wedge set for $60 from Rockbottomgolf.com. It comes with a 52, 56, and 60. Of course they don't provide super spin but I thought they were fine.

Is that handicap accurate of did you just guesstimate it? Doesn't seem like that much of an entry level handicap to me.

I agree, I feel wedges are very important and you would be better served to get what feels right for you.

I started playing again last year after a 15 year layoff. :(

So the background was there for everything, just had to figure it back out again, which is still a work in progress (like everything in golf!). :)

What should I be looking for in terms of bounce? I'm not very familiar with this qualification.

Posted
The bounce is supposed to depend on the lies you usually play and your swing type. The more the bounce the steeper the swing type and the thicker the lie. As to types of wedges I always play Clevelands. They have the best feel for me. I would try to feel both a Vokey and a Cleveland CG. Ditch the Callaway. But thats me....

Not to hijack this thread at all ... but I'm thinking of new wedges as well, but wanted to know how often low handicappers change wedges. I've had mine three years now and although I cannot spin the ball, I notice the "bite" on the greens lessening. I know my grooves aren't as sharp as brand new.

Do you guys change wedges every so often or do you just re-finish the grooves?. Thanks and sorry for the hi-jacked thread.

Yea the bounce is all about the divot you normally take

Low bounce - Swiper, very shallow divot if any Mid bounce - Regular, is a normal size divot High Bounce - Digger, deep divots I just purchased the 52° Spin Milled Vokey 8° bounce and so far i love it.

What if I'm a swiper but am trying to become a divoter? :D

go with mid bounce then 10° bounce. this will give you the best of both worlds

its forgiving on both kind of shots. you can use this to see what wedges would be best for your game Cleveland Wedge Fitting

Ok Principle, I should not be replying (Dolphin Fan Here)....

I started plying about 6 months ago, and I bought a cheap LW Zevo 60-08 for about $20 or so. I loved it, in fact I still do. I have a naturally high spin ball of my short irons. I bought a Vockey (used) 60-04, Thinking that the the bounce would allow me to open the face more....which it does, but for some reason, I find myself skulling the ball with the 04* bounce far more than the 08. I should note that I also bought a Vokey SM 56-10, and I am very happy with it. I'm thinking about replacing my 60-04 for a 60-08 or so. The biggest issue is the ground you play....that should help you determine the type of bounce you get, but if you play all over the place with varying conditions, then go for the middle range 07,08,10* bounce depending on brands. Hope this helps PS~GO DOLPHINS!!!!!!

I bought a cheap LW a few years back to see if i'd like one before i spend the $$$ on a "good" one... am i ever happy i did that...they aren't very forgiving. I did the same thing 2 weeks ago with an AW 54* and i love it. i'll probably look for a super deal on a good one this winter via ebay.

Greg Norman has been the spokesman for McGregor clubs the last several years. His showing in the British Open a while back put McGregor back on the map as far as club manufacturers. I don't know much about the V-Foil clubs, but I believe (could be wrong) that is their latest brand.

    • 39, +4. A bit better hip slide stuff. More lateral, less turn with the hips.
    • Day 11: Worked on putting with the metronome
    • I added to total today by hopping it in on the first hole for an eagle. A short par 4, I hit 4 wood to 110. With a little breeze in my face I hit a 50 degree gap wedge to 2 feet and watched it hop into the hole for an eagle 2!
    • Sounds good. Text me if you have any questions. You have a good setup, too, and so long as you can get good camera angles… you should be good. https://skillest.com/@iacas
    • Day 14 (September 18).  Morning practice, despite questionable weather (it's raining).   Worked on chipping at first, including run-ups with UW and PW;  I've noticed lately some of my near-GIRs are missing forward, with nothing but grass ahead of me, but 20-30 yards to the pin.  After a few misadventures putting those lately, I wanted to at least get a feeling for what a 30-yard chip shot that doesn't have the variance of my quarter lob wedge would feel like.  I still think "putt when you can putt" is right, but... I am less sure I have a 30 yard putt in me.  Range time also, of course, same routine as the past week or so (drill, 3-4 slow shots, etc).   Did not get to the putting green as it was starting to come down a bit more. Darn, it really is raining.  And I thought today would be a perfect day to play, seeing as how it's 9-18 and all.
