Just wanted to know how important it was to have matching clubs (ie. clubs that have the same grip, shaft, flex, etc....) Reason why I'm asking is because I recently brought a new lob wedge and was shanking about half of my shots (did not occur with any other club though). Change of grip and all was fine and dandy

its all mental and how it related to your confidence, for instance... look at my bag, there's a huge reason why you see all Titleist. Well we all know they make good clubs but there are easier clubs out there but get a lot of confidence when I look at my bag and know that I need to make the shot and not have to rely on some "forgiveness" which only makes me lazy...

I firmly believe in matching clubs not necessarily all the same brand but that grips, loft, lie, length, swingweight/total weight and frequency/shafts all play very similar.

Grips: It's the only part of the club you touch. Since touch is such an important sense for us so I like to have the size and texture as consistant as possible. Loft: Make sure to get this checked every so often in your iron and wedges. Making sure you have the proper gap in between clubs can help with any distance control issues you may have. Lie: Is most important on your higher lofted clubs (ie, wedges) Also important to have this checked every so often. This is a huge part in accuracy. Length: This is more important to help maintain the correct posture at address and throughout your swing. Helping ensure good and consistant contact with the ball. Distance is only slightly affected with lengthening or shortening a club, strive for good contact first. Swingweight/Total Weight: The average player may not be able to tell the difference between 1-2 swingweights. After that though yes swingweights should all be very similar for feel. Also keep total weight in mind when adding or replacing clubs again so that all your clubs have a similar feel. Frequency/Shaft: Placed these together because not all your shafts have to match and be the same brand but they should all perform and feel the same.

Grips:

That being said: I don't swing my wedge like I swing my driver, and my 3W has a different swing than both of those. So I don't mind if my irons have different grips than my other clubs. I group them like this: Driver, 3W/Hybrid, Irons (including PW), SW/LW, putter. Each group can have different grips, but I like all the items in those groups to have the same grip.

Lie:

Just a small correction: wedges are your higher-lofted clubs. So he means that it's most important on your higher-lofted clubs, like wedges. Doesn't matter so much on your driver.
