Have a quick question. I went out golfing the other day for the first time in about 5 years because my great golf partner died (grandpa) so I have been away from the game for awhile... good thing is I can still hit the ball fairly well except for my big slice on my drives.

Question is can drivers go "dead"? Like a baseball bat? When I drive is sounds like a shotgun going off.

Good thing is I am looking at other options. Taylormade burners and callaway possibly even a cleveland.

im going to go to the pro shop hopefully tomorrow to hit some.

bring your driver with you when you go on the launch monitor. remember you do not have to buy a driver when you go out.

drive for show and putt or get up and down for dough is true.

the driver is not going to drop 5 strokes off your game, no matter how well you hit the new driver unless your short game is working.

you can hit a great drive down the middle of the fairway and still make triple boogie on a hole on the other hand if you miss hit your driver on a par 5 you can still get up and down to save par and sometimes make birdie

Amen Brother! The other week while in Palm Springs playing 2 rounds a day, I had my best driving day of the whole trip. Average drives were in the 280-300 range, and virtually down the middle. Heck, I even was hitting most of the greens in reg, but still shot an 87.

Why? I three putted 8 greens!!! By far my worst putting exhibition in many many years... BTW, you might also try the Adams Speedline. I tried many drivers at the range, and the Speedline suited me the best. (I also got a free three wood with it) Gary

thanks for the replies, but my original answer still hasnt been answered.

can a driver go "dead" like a baseball bat? thanks

the main reason i am looking for a driver is because i have had the same clubs since i was 13 and i am 24 now. i need a stiff shaft so im told and mine is a regular shaft.

yes, they can go dead. my guess is that your driver isn't dead, though.

Goals: Correct slice on driver/long clubs(close!), work on consistent iron distance, practice aiming irons

If it was fine before you stopped playing, I doubt it's dead. How is your distance with it? Do you feel like it doesn't go far even on good contact?

I can hit it about 240 on a nice straight hit.. I used to be able to hit in the 270's to mid 280's.

I think that your distance issues are probably from: 1) lack of play affecting your swing/ball contact quality, 2) lack of playing affecting your flexability and ability to turn, or 3) you are 5 years older! :D

The good news is that two out of the three you can fix! AND, I would hazard a guess that the newer tech drivers will outperform your old one.

My grandpa got me started in golfing, and, unfortunately, he also died relatively young, and I too missed playing with him a lot. He and I had great matches, as I would kill him with my length, but he would even things up with his short game.

Regards,

Gary

thats crazy. thats exactly how he was. he was a killer in his short game... but sometimes i think he forgot to count strokes too.. haha

I have a buddy that conveniently forgets to count strokes too. And somehow, his ball always goes OB or lost about 40 yards further than where I remember seeing it exit the field of play...but I digress.

Your driver, if it sounds different, may have a crack somewhere. Another buddy (not the same stroke-shaver as above) had one of those Snake Eyes from Golfsmith. The crown actually cracked and you could tell immediately that something was wrong. It went from sounding like a bb in a shooting gallery to a pop can getting stomped. I would check for any small cracks in the crown or the face.

However, if you don't find any obvious physical flaws, the answer could be as simple as pointed out earlier. Age, flexibility and time off from playing.

    • Ok, I'm trying to find a feel to hit a consistent ball flight (irons).  My current predicament.  1. I try to do the arms down stuff better, with the club feeling like it is way behind me more. It's just a cluster of results. Most of the time, I can't get any speed on the swing. If I get my arms down faster, I just throw them out.  2. I focus all my attention on turning better. Pushing off with my left leg and getting my right side through better. On the DTL view, this doesn't produce anywhere close where the hands and club should be. The result is usually ball first contact, lower ball flight, more centered contact.  At this point, I am going with option 2. Stop thinking about what the hands do. Just make a shorter backswing, keep it wide, turn through. Somehow, the club head finds the ball. My focus is so much on just making sure I turn, it's like, "Oh, that contact was better.... Oh, that bell flight looks playable." If not, I will just be practicing my entire summer.
    • Nope, they spent too much money. They are in over 28 million on the football roster and related NIL compensation at this point. Boosters associated with any Texas college football team has HUGE sway. The AD is between a rock and a hard place. They put a lot of money into Sorsby, at the chance of winning a NC this year. If you move on, you basically wasted a lot.  This is why Ohio State wants 3 QB's they feel can start. That is why the backups the past 5 years at some point transfer. Texas Tech has no backup near the quality of Sorsby. If they move on, they are screwed for 2026.
    • Maybe there's something I still don't understand about the situation. Wouldn't Texas Tech do itself a favor to move on from Sorsby at this point?
    • Day 281 6-10 Full swing, fast, getting low point ahead of "towel".  Working on flow during this seems to help.
