Help !!!

I purchased Golfshot GPS last spring and its worked fine up until a few weeks ago. Since then, now when I turn on, it locates the couse I am playing ok

but then when I go to hole I am playing, it stays stuck with "Acquiring Sat." showing up top and I do not get yardage. Has anyone else had this problem and know a fix?

I am using on my 3GS. Thanks

I've been using Golfshot GPS for practice rounds for a while and I think it's great. The only problem I have with it is that its not legal for comp use at my club because it's an IPhone which breaks 2 rules:

1. You aren't allowed to have a mobile phone switched on the course at my club although many people bend this rule.

2. Despite the Golfshot GPS app being conforming in what it does, IPhone's strictly speaking are non conforming for other reasons because they have Compass, access to weather apps and even spirit level type apps... even if you don't use these app's you theoretically could do so you are potentially in breach of rule 14.3. Or at least that's my interpretation and seems to be the generally accepted interpretation of that rule at my club.

I've been using golfshot on iPhone 4 for the last 4 months. Wonderful app. It instantly finds whatever course you happen to be playing, has all the tracking you'd ever want. One kind of cool thing is that you can tell it how far you hit certain clubs in your bag and it will figure out layup distances for you as well. What really sold me on it is that it is not a subscription model. You buy the app once and you're done. You get access to all the courses in the database. One last cool thing. It has an automatic handicap calculator. For playing partners who don't keep proper handicaps, this has proved really useful. They guess their original handicap and then, as they play rounds recorded in golfshot, it updates their index based on this data. It also competes net scores automatically so if you want to have a competition based on net scores under stroke play, it's a breeze.

    • Day 11: did mirror work for a while. Worked on the same stuff.
    • I'm not sure you're calculating the number of strokes you would need to give correctly. The way I figure it, a 6.9 index golfer playing from tees that are rated 70.8/126 would have a course handicap of 6. A 20-index golfer playing from tees that are rated 64/106 would have a course handicap of 11. Therefore, based on the example above, assuming this is the same golf course and these index & slope numbers are based on the different tees, you should only have to give 5 strokes (or one stroke on the five most difficult holes if match play) not 6. Regardless, I get your point...the average golfer has no understanding of how the system works and trying to explain it to people, who haven't bothered to read the documentation provided by either the USGA or the R&A, is hopeless. In any case, I think the WHS as it currently is, does the best job possible of leveling the playing field and I think most golfers (obviously, based on the back & forth on this thread, not all golfers) at least comprehend that.

    • Yes it's true in a large sample like a tournament a bunch of 20 handicaps shouldn't get 13 strokes more than you. One of them will have a day and win. But two on one, the 7 handicap is going to cover those 13 strokes the vast majority of the time. 20 handicaps are shit players. With super high variance and a very asymmetrical distribution of scores. Yes they shoot 85 every once in a while. But they shoot 110 way more often. A 7 handicap's equivalent is shooting 74 every once in a while but... 86 way more often?
