best shaft for your $

I've got my Taylormade Burner TP driver from a couple years ago still and I think its time for a new shaft in it. I love the the way the club sets up, but feel like the stock shaft that I have in it just isn't working for my swing right now. I hit the club great when I first got it, but I seem to notice that with any new driver or 3 wood I hit it great for the first month or two, then start going back to my old habits for some reason. I want to get a new shaft in it and feel (hope) that if I do this, maybe I'll start hitting it well again.

Stock shaft right now is the Re-Ax 65 TP, 65 g, Tip-stiff. Any suggestions to replace this with for a fair price?

It would be impossible to recommend a shaft without knowing your swing.....

Any suggestions without .knowing your speed, tempo, SF, AOI, location...etc would be a disservice to you

I'm enjoying my Grafalloy AXIS Blue shaft. You could get the Red if you want lower launch.

this is the real answer but I will add that I had a UST proforce 65 gram stiff shaft thrown into my Callaway hyper x and have never looked back - hit 7 fairways and the shot dispersion is tight and it feels great.

Yeah you need to get fitted. Bottom line. But the graffaloy prolaunch red is pretty slick for only 50 bcuks.

We need info on your swing speed, whether you hit it high or low, what trajectory you want?

For low flights Grafolloy Pro Launch red

No worries though, we all do it (I did it recently actually). Was hitting the ball good to start off with a new driver and all of a sudden started hitting it bad so I wanted to change shafts, lofts, etc... anything to hit the ball better when it was my swing all along. ;)

If you were hitting it good at one point but are not now, it's probably not the club. If you're like me, when you start hitting driver bad you swing way too hard. The problem is that you hit it good when you first got it, so you confidence was sky high with it. So, you likely started trying to squeeze a few more yards out of it by swinging harder since you've been hitting it so well. Once your timing is just slightly off and you're swinging at 100%, bad things are going to happen.

Just my .02 from my own personal experiences.

You're more than likely right........there's also a chance he bought a flex that's too weak for him and after a few weeks of playing with it it's loosened up a little bit and he's having trouble controlling it. That used to happen to me before I swtiched to X-flex shafts. But......there's a better chance you're right

Could be. I've never heard of a shaft loosening up after a while?

I've always heard that brand new shafts play a little stiffer than they will after they are hit for awhile. Whenever I get a new driver, I've always thought the shaft plays a bit tighter than it does after a few rounds/range sessions.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'm not exactly sure what my swingspeed is, i want to say around 105-110 mph, usually hit it low unless I'm swinging it real well, ball gets up pretty good. I want to be able to consistently hit a high ball and really am just looking for more control off the tee. The stock shaft in it right now seems a little whippy and I can't get a good feel for the weight of the clubhead. I'm going to get fitted in the next day or two, I'll keep the suggested options in mind.

As for the loosening up thing after awhile, that actually kind of makes sense or at least I'll convince myself it does cause I feel like every driver I've had has been like this; I'll hit it great for the first few weeks and then it starts going wild on me. I swear if I just had like 3 or 4 drivers to switch off with every couple weeks my game would be solid, but isn't that always the case?

Sounds like what happens to me. I bought a 907 D2 and had it in the bag and couldn't hit it well. I tried to swing hard and really put it out there but thats didnt work either. Now I am back to my trusty Cobra and things are coming back around. My Cobra is ugly as sin but it works and I can put my drives out there at about 280 ( give or take 5 yards ) when my tempo is right on.

Good luck with the fitting.....they are always fun to mess around with different stuff and see what's best.

You're on the borderline of Stiff vs. X-Stiff. You might want to try a little bit heavier shaft too to see if it helps with control.

I agree that you should consider X flex. I swing at around that same speed and I use X and slightly heavier shafts. I have no problem getting the ball up the air like some people warn might happen with too stiff a shaft. Sure, I might be missing out on a tiny bit of distance that would come from a more active S flex shaft, but it feels better to me and keeps the ball under control.

I don't know why, but a lot of people (including salespeople at stores, random people at the course, etc) make it seem X flex shafts will be impossible to hit unless you are a scratch or something. I think it's a myth. One last piece of evidence: I often hit knockdown half shots with either my 3 wood or hybrid to get out of trouble, and even those shots get up and carry in the air just fine (although not as high as a normal shot, obviously, but that is the whole point of a knockdown shot), even though my swing speed for them is probably only 60-70 mph. Don't fear the X flex!

I think there would be no problems with an X flex. I would love to get fitted some day for a driver and 3 wood. Just no time or extra cash just sittin around.

I have a 2009 Burner, which had the longer shaft(46 1/2 ") and was a very light shaft. I replaced the shaft with the proforce V2 and am very pleased with the change.
