I currently shoot in the high 80's or lower 90's just depends on whats going on. Once or twice this season i've been in the low 80's. I currently play Nike Slingshot's. Chipping is one of my biggest problems, but i also miss quite a few GIR. I believe the soles of the Slingshots are hurting because they are so thick. I know i probably need a few swing changes but my drives are straight as an arrow. None the less do you think i would benefit from getting something with a little thinner sole or am i just being stupid.

Note: I hit my long irons pretty well but my scoring irons tend to struggle

Alright, what about nike pro combo? I can hit my sand wedge very consistent and its a blade (VR). I'm not looking to spend tons on my game because i don't want to become really really good, i'd like to be able to play bogey golf and not be a nuisance to better playing partners i.e more greens in regulation.

Your clubs aren't a burden to your game. I don't think you'd hit anything better than what you have now, probably.

And if your hinting that you want to go with blades because you hit a blade wedge well, you're wrong. Hitting a 5 or 6 iron blade is a lot different than hitting a sand wedge.

I'm not saying that you can't get better with new clubs, or different G.I. irons, but I don't think it's in your best interest to drop money if you aren't looking to become very serious about the game. If you are just doing it more for recreational, I don't see your clubs prohibiting you. The current set you have now is fine for what you're looking for it seems.

I'm not talking blades. Nike Pro Combos, only have blades in the scoring clubs (PW-8) or something like that. Then they go to cavity back as you continue to go up. I play once or twice a week and wouldn't mind being better but thats not the over all goal here. I really believe my clubs are holding me back a bit, it's hard to believe i know but if you've ever played Super GI irons then i'm sure you'd know the feeling.

If you hit your (current) long irons well, you might want to consider just replacing the scoring irons. You can order individual irons in most sets.

I've thought about this too.. The thing is i have a buddy who is just starting golf and wants club so i can sell my current irons for 150 and get a set of pro combos in pretty good shape off ebay for around 250 which would mean i only have 100 dollars in new irons.

Ok, so then it's your decision; what was the point of even posing the question of getting different irons?

Maybe you should've rephrased the title to "Which NEW irons would suit my game?"

I have been there before - I used to have the Taylor Made RAC OS irons, with a lot offset. I hooked the shit out of every single iron. So, that's when I knew it was time to A. Get some lessons, and B. Get new irons. Both, helped my game and I hit straighter now.

If you want different irons, get them. It's not going to improve you're game, probably, at a 20 handicap...It may help, may not, or might not do anything. It's tough to say not seeing your swing or anything whether or not you should be using more of a players club or what you have no is fine. I'm sure what you have now is fine, just work on the range a bit more with the high irons, and that will save you money. Then, once you work on the range, in a year or so you could get different irons. Does that satisfy what you're looking for? I'm not sure what response your looking for, to be honest. If you want different irons, get different irons. No one can sit behind a computer screen and make the purchase for you - it's that simple.

Missed GIR's + Poor Chipping = High Scores.

At least it does for me!

I would say to spend as much time practicing chipping as you do hitting full shots on the range, and on your range shots, spend 50% or more 7-PW shots.

Are your missed GIR's following any patterns? I.E., generally missed in a certain direction?

You mentioned having chipping woes - what happens?

I've had chipping problems in the past - and still occasionally, where my chip would be 45 degrees off target - talk about frustrating and embarassing.

I've started a new method - which has helped me tremendously.

I put my right pointer finger down the shaft (as some do when putting), and it keeps my chips MUCH straigter.

I think my problem was swinging too easy and not squaring the clubface and possibly opening the clubface as I brought the club back.

Anyway, don't forget to practice putting and chipping - it will help your game tremendously - is still working for me.

My 2 cents.

If you cannot the ones you have now, you'll not be able to hit new ones. Sure you might get a confidence boost at first with the new ones and actually hit them well for a while, but in the end, unless you practice more and practice the right way, you won't improve no matter what irons you're using.

I say keep them and spend the money on lessons and range balls and when you're at the range, don't hit anything but SW and PW, ever.

+1 here,

I also switched from TM RAC OS irons to a player's iron, but I made it down to a 10 before doing that (and i was a 10 without any semblance of a short game). I would echo what everyone else in this thread has said: from everything I can tell, buying new irons is not the answer to your issue. In all likelihood, You wont hit 2x as many greens by switching to player's scoring irons, Sorry to break it to you. BUT, I will side with you on one thing: if you've lost confidence in your current set and want new irons, get new irons. No sense in playing with irons you don't like.
