Hi all,
My bag currently has Callaway X18r PW and SW (not sure of * or bounce, 47 and 56 maybe??), and an X forged 64*. 09 bounce. I've been golfing or at the driving range daily for the past two weeks and see that there is way too much of a distance gap between my SW and the 64*. Anyone want to suggest which wedge I fill the gap with? Degree and bounce? I'd like to stay with the x forged chrome series to keep my matching set. Thanks.

Brandon

I would say stop thinking that way. Buy and read Dave Pelz Short Game Bible, and work on 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 swings.

Figure out your yardages for those swings for the wedges you have.

I would never think that there is a distance gap between your S and your L like there could be between your P and your S, and anyway I would rather hit a part swing P or S inside 70 yards than a full 60* or 63*. If you are thinking about hitting a 60* or 64* L wedge full speed from close I would think that you are going to be backing the ball off the green with the backspin you would create.

your 64 should be a finesse club, not a full consistent shot to call on. That kind of club is for getting creative out of trouble spots. better figure out how to pitch different distances with that sw and pw.

Thanks for the info, guys. I'll head out tomorrow and work on the fractioned swings for different distances. Looking for that book on amazon right now, tim.

An x18 PW is 45 or 46 degrees, so I would look at filling the 10 degree gap between PW and SW with a 50 degree gap wedge, and ditching the 64 for a 60. You can open up the 60, and do almost everything a 64 can do, and with a 40 hcp. a 64 degree is a pretty dicey club to have in the bag anyway.

A 50 or a 52 degree gap wedge should fit nicely.

agreed about the 50-52* and learning the 1/2, 3/4, etc... swings and the distance associated with them.

Yep I'd get rid of the 64 and get a 52.

Ok, tides have changed, X prototypes are ordered and Ill need a SW as my brother inherits my X18's. 54* 15 bounce sound about right?

X Forged irons with a 40 handicap? This should be real interesting, good luck with them.

I chose them as, from what I've read, they provide better feedback as far as mishits are concerned. I'm really trying to perfect my fundamentals.

Well, went out and hit about 100 balls with my SW and PW at 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, and full swings to get a feel for distances today. worked out really well for me. So the question of what to use as a SW with my X prototypes still stands? 54*, 56*, bounce?

    • The first issue Erik spoke about is something we worked on for my swing during both GEARS sessions. GEARS was showing my pelvis center moving towards the ball during the back swing. I wasn’t the 4” guy though! This forced me to correct on the downswing to give myself space. My hip rotation was to high as well. We corrected it by first getting the weight off my heels in my stance and getting my posture correct. Then the feel was shifting back into my right hip at a 45 degree angle. This kept my pelvis center from moving towards the ball at the start of the backswing. I also didn’t sway back as much as I felt I did because of the angle I was shifting. Feel Ain’t Real. The cool thing about GEARS is as you work on something you can see the exact (Real) change happening. On video, it is much harder to spot this issue because of the 2D nature of filming. But I know what to look for now. Sadly, I was hurt all last year and most of this year so I really haven’t been able to work on it much. I did do a lot of backswing work though.
