The only interesting club in those might be the 64* Dunlop. The rest just belong in a museum (or your garage). But hey, at least you have something to swing now.

I was afraid of that, haha. Oh well, it's not much money lost, if they're useless. I'm sure I can unload them if need be.

EDIT: ^Thank you. I may pick those up, as well, if these that I just bought are useless.

Where in TN are you? I am about 80 miles North of Knoxville. I may have some clubs you could try . . .

I'm in West Tennessee, halfway between Memphis and Nashville. That's probably a bit far to travel, but thanks for the offer. :D

Well, I appreciate all the help, guys. I got in the ebay clubs, and they aren't so hot. I hit some practice balls around the yard and went to the driving range with them today and made a fool of myself, but on the way home, I stopped to pick up the set of Wilsons mentioned above, and the guy threw in a free chipper for me. They seem nice enough. I'll probably head to the driving range wednesday and give them a spin.

Thanks again for the help.

Thanks for that advice.

If you have time for golf, you should have time for lessons. Getting started on the right path will bring consideralbly more enjoyment to your game, and you will progress much faster.

Is it okay to resurrect a year old thread? I hope so...

Well, it has been a year. That $65 set of Wilsons is still the set of clubs I use, besides a new driver (Nike Dymo SQ2) and a new putter (Nike IC I found brand new for $40).

I still haven't had any time (or money) for lessons, but I'm getting better every time I play and having a ton of fun doing it.

The equipment problem I'm having now is that I've played so much, that I'm wearing out the grips on the Wilson irons, and it just feels kind of funny paying as much to have some old, beat up clubs regripped as I payed for the clubs, so I'm considering a new set of irons.

Any suggestions for a still beginner level golfer that needs clubs that are straight and forgiving, as much as anything? I don't have much of a set budget, but as always, the cheaper the better. Still, I'm willing to pay for quality.

EDIT: Well, I was going to edit my original post to save people from reading through 3 pages of junk, but it won't seem to let me. Sorry!

Kyle

You can't go wrong with a good set of Ping Eye 2's. They're plentiful, have a reputation for being some of the most forgiving irons ever made by any company, can be purchased for very reasonably prices on Ebay, and retain their value fairly well when it's time to trade up or sell. If you decide to go this route get a static fitting on the Ping website ( www.pinggolf.com ) followed up by a trip to your local golf shop or golf pro to determine the proper color code, then go to Ebay and find a set to bid on. You should be able to do this for between $50 and $200 depending on your color code.

P.S. Like your handle. I used to play a '62 Strat and now I have a Gretsch Country Gentleman.

Thanks for the advice. I'll have to look into those clubs. What do the different colors mean?

Also, thanks for the handle compliment. I don't actually own a 62 strat, though I wish I did. My guitar of choice is my 2005 American Deluxe Ash Strat. Guitar playing is a more money-consuming hobby than golf, for me, haha.

    • Probably since the golfer has to swing the club back and up. The hands have to move back and up. You can feel them go back and up just by turning the shoulders and bending the right arm, because it brings your hands towards your right shoulder.  The difference is if you maintain width or not. Less width means a shorter feeling swing path so the more you need to lift the arms. Being as someone who gets the right arm bend at 110+ degrees, it's 100% a timing issue. I am use to like a 1.5+ second backswing. It probably should be like 1 second at most. Half a second or more will feel like an eternity. I have had swings where I keep my right arm straighter and I am still trying to time the downswing based on the old tempo.  Ideally, for me, it is probably going to be a much quicker and shorter (in duration) backswing, while keeping the right elbow straighter. Which also means more hinging to get swing length without over swinging.

    • I'm currently recuperating from surgery, so no golf, but have been thinking about this quite a bit. This and the don't overbend the right arm thing. It's hard for me to even pose the position, so I'm not 100% sure, but I feel like it's impossible to have the right humerus along the shirt seam and not overbend your right arm, unless your hands are down near your hips. If the left arm is up at or above the shoulder plane and your right arm is bent less than 90 degrees, then your right humerus has to raise or your hands will get pulled apart. Your left hand can't reach your right hand unless either the right upper arm is up or the right arm is overbent. Is that right? If it is, then focusing on not overbending the right arm would force you to raise the humerus. And actually thinking further on it, if you do overbend your right arm, then you're basically forcing your upper arm down or forcing your left arm to bend. Since (for me at least) bending the left arm too much is not something I think I need to worry about, it means that the bend in the trail arm is really the driving force behind what happens to the right humerus.
    • I managed to knock off a 3, a 13, and a 15 a couple of weeks ago. The 3 was a 185 yard par 3 with a 6 iron to 12 feet. 13 was a 350 yard par 4, which was a 2 iron and a 9 iron to about a foot. 15 was a 560 yard par 5 with a driver in a bunker, 4 iron into the semi, gap wedge to 8 feet and a putt.
