Hey guys, got a question for ya. So, I'm hitting my irons solidly but I am coming over the top on the downswing. The ball doesnt curve or anything but usually takes off left of my target and stays left and the divot is also pointing left of the target.

I think this is a sign of coming over the top. Am I right here? And if so, how can I correct this?

Thanks!

Jim

You are pulling it, correct? Yes that is over the top. I have a problem with this, well had. I had a lesson and one of the things he changed was to move farther from the ball, felt wierd but now if feels normal. Also another thing you really have to work on is the back swing. If you come to far to the inside you have no where to go but the outside on the down swing.

Hey Lefty, thanks a lot for the reply. My backswing is solid, so I think.. I make a straight back takeaway and dont bring the club to plane until its about waist high.

But then I swing pretty hard and come right over the top and pull it. Usually its not a hardcore pull, but enough to make me pin high to the left 99% of the time. Usually in the greenside rough.

How far away should I stand from the ball?? And is this a temporary fix? Meaning does it just fix the problem, or is it part of key fundamentals, because the way I set up now, my hands hang freely like I read they are supposed to. I feel if I stand farther away, I will be stretching out my arms and throwing something else off whack....

Thanks!

Jim

The towel-under-the-armpit drill should help keep that right elbow tucked in. On your downswing, you want to think about putting that right elbow into your right pocket. That should help keep you from casting and coming over the top.
