So i've started taking lessons, and my golf instructor told me that I shouldn't be using my back (in my left-handed case, left shoulder) to push the ball, instead pulling it through with my front arm.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips or drills to really focus on pulling through the ball and not pushing it with my shoulder, thank you!

Currently, I mainly think about keeping my sternum straight perpendicular to the ball at impact, and then letting my momentum pull my shoulders through to my follow through/ finish.

For the right handed:

Take and club and assume the correct top of the swing position. Now, keeping the shoulders fully turned, start the left hand and arm slowly downward into the ball. When the left hand and arm has moved downward for a distance of about a foot to eighteen inches...STOP.... and return it to the top again. Repeat this downward movement several times, keeping the shoulders in the fully turned position.

Pull down and through with your lead shoulder (not arm). Find another instructor, or save a lot of money and buy "The Golf Swing and Its Master Key Explained" by Noel Thomas. It is sold in both right handed and left handed editions.

My instructors fine, but I only see him 30 minutes, once a week so a lot of learning, practicing, and reinforcing is done by myself.

Thank you though for the swing tip

Ben Hogan's "Five Lessons" is another book you should read, although there is no left handed version.

I am still having problems with this. Anyone got any suggestions? I'm thinking about finding someone to use the butt end of a club to make sure that my left shoulder doesn't push the ball and also to help me learn what this feels like and how to swing without doing it. I think that this is causing me to come over the top a bit and slicing!

Thanks!

It sounds to me like he's just trying to quiet your left side, and have you use your right side more. Take an impact bag (if you can get one) and swing only using your right arm. If you do this with an impact bag, you'll see that the only way to generate power with your non-dominant arm is to use your lower body to pull the club through. If you open up your shoulders, you'll have no power coming into the bag.

I went to the range yesterday and thought about this thread so I tried dropping the arms first while keeping the rest of my body still, then turning the hips and completing the the turn. Smoothly, of course

Well, I believe I was doing this already to an extent, but I didn't realize it. As my first move on the downswing is shifting my weight to my left and turning my hips, I noticed my arm started to drop while I was shifting and before my hips turned.

I will say that holding your shoulders back for a split second while the arms dropped definitely made my swing feel...better. Not sure how else to describe it. Maybe a bit more powerful and smooth at the same time. However, holding back too long could be real bad. It all happens very quick and you really can't concentrate on that.

What I did was make the same swing I would normally, but consciously let my arms fall about a foot or so before making swing.

    • Day 197 (15 Nov 24) - Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management.  Solid round of 83 (41/42) - 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.
    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.
