I've had these for four years or so...

Yeah... I know what you're probably thinking, but I play with them pretty decently. I can hit that driver 250-300 easily... one time hitting 350 past a Par 4 green... but would Callaway clubs or something expensive really improve my game at all? If so, how?

If you have the money, I would consider buying an iron set of PW - 5 iron set for about $100 - $140. I recommend the Mizuno Comp Ez forged oversize irons. the wedges used are about $30 - $60 each used.

Keep track of your putts and up and down each hole. I like to practice my chipping around the green and shots from within 50 yards to get my score down.

The

price isn't what makes clubs good. I'm guessing that since your set came in a box, it probably wasn't fit for you. Since you clearly have a swing, and getting fit just gets easier as the years progress, my suggestion is to get fit. Decide whether you want Game-Improvement Irons or Players' Irons and attend demo days. Find a set you like. If you like Callaway, go for those. If you find yourself preferring Cobra or Titleist or Mizuno, go with those. Get the right length shaft, the right size grip, and the right set configuration. Oh, and there's no obligation to replace the entire set at once. If you're find with the 3- and 4-irons from that set, you might just get 5-P if you buy new irons and keep the SGI irons, assuming the expected distances don't change with the new clubs. In short, yes, I think clubs that aren't a "complete set" off the rack are better for you. You need to determine a budget and priority on the clubs and find ones you like, though.

Thanks for the help, I've been thinking about getting fit.

But this is a dumb question... how much would it cost to get fit for clubs? And where would be the best place to have it done? Golfsmith? Golf Galaxy?

Thanks. :)

You can always go to ping.com and go through their online fitting. I think it's technically called a static fitting or something like that. They have you put in your height, do a wrist to floor measurement, and some other information, and it spits back out to to you a lie angle and ping color code. You can then go look for some used clubs with those specs, or use that as a starting point. That's what I did.

Thanks for the help, I've been thinking about getting fit.

One company that is often overlooked and makes high quality clubs at very reasonable prices and custom fits every club for you (like Ping) is Tour Edge. They don't advertise a lot and pass the savings on. They don't have the same hype as the bigger budget manufacturers.

And they custom fit every single club for free! The lie, shaft, grip, etc will all be manufactured and shipped to you for free. It's one of the best deals in golf. My dad uses Tour Edge and I swing his gear sometimes and it's really good and custom fitted for his body and swing. Also, what will improve our game more? $400.00 on new irons or a few lessons?

    • Day 197 (15 Nov 24) - Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management.  Solid round of 83 (41/42) - 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.
    • Have been on a mid to low 80’s roll of late - today was no different with an 83 (41 front / 42 back).   Played in the Friday men’s group outing - blustery conditions in play (wind gusting 10-20; spotty pop up misting rain; temps in the mid 50’s), so it was a good day to work on course management, delivering 7 GIR, total 32 putts - included 10 pars (3 being up and downs), a dbl and triple bogie.  Local course starting to get that winter feel - wet areas wetter, thin grass thinner, greens  trickier.
